Default Blu-ray portable movies

Choose how you would want portable movies to be done on Blu-ray

1. Free, and only usable on PSP

2. Free, only for iPod

3. Free, usable on iPod/PSP

4. Paid for, but able to use on any PMP

5. Paid for, and able to use on iPod/PSP

6. I have no interest in portable movies being put onto Blu-rays, so use the space for higher bitrate/better audio/more extras

Edit:
I will add that if any player comes out that supports AVC and is from a BDA company then it can be added retrospectively to options 3 and 5.

I figured that Sony would only ever do it for free if it was locked into BDA member players, i.e. buy our players and discs and they will be compatible, but buy a Zune and our discs, you got to pay.

maybe true, but why care to be honest? sony and other bda companies would still be selling software and hardware to be able to create the products. which means more sold for the proliferation of BR

I like option 3. It would also make sense that it would work with iPod since Apple's a member of the BDA. Man, this would be so awesome if it actually pans out (fingers crossed). I use my PSP whenever I travel and it's so much more convenient for watching movies than a laptop, etc.

Word.

Better yet, free, and usable on any PMP, made from any member of the BDA.

I voted 3 but really could not care less about iPod

But if it can be done that is cool. Nothing against iPod.

But if it is only PSP that is fine by me. And it must be free.

I thought about that too, but as of yet, the only two PMP devices from the BDA companies that support AVC are the iPod and PSP, I doubt the compressionists will want to put multiple versions of a portable file on a BD.

What's the point in having portable blu ray on an ipod or psp? The video quality would be the same as if you ripped the movie from a dvd.

That is not actually true for the PSP at least.

The max res for PSP is not doable with non-DRM content as far as I know (it may be possible if you jump through some hoops).

Assuming that the BD content would be DRM'ed, it can be full res and so will look as nice as the UMDs.

'Home made' content has never looked as nice as the UMDs that I have seen...

Different codecs have different advantages and disadvantages when it comes to quality.

For example, GIF vs JPEG

I used to have a PSP, but traded it in once I moved closer to work (it was my distraction while on the subway). If I could put pre-encoded versions of the films I own on a PSP or iPod, I would definitely repurchase a PSP and get a huge memory stick. I'm planning a few trips soon, and it would definitely come in handy.

this is just speculation, obviously there are ups and downs that i am not seeing and am just flying off the seat of my pants.

what if there was a program published by sony or some other BDA company wherein you can rip the content but it would place a DRM protection on the file created? this way, the compressionists don't have another thing to do and we can put it on any DRM protected device in a codec we prefer?

I see this as a way of Sony transitioning from UMD for movies on the PSP. And for all studios to open up a greater market for their movies.

For much less than a UMD movie, a PSP owner will get a free HD movie. What a deal! What an incentive to buy a player capable of managing this content.

Same if an iPOD version is offered. You can bet that would mean Apple would bring out Mac desktops and laptops with BD drives in them!

Total footprint, 4-5GB on a 50GB disc?

Yet another: THAT is why you need the capacity. Actually, TL51 suddenly became a lot clearer. Maybe all the studios are demanding the 50GB for this exact reason. To be able to target the portables.

Gary

I don't like the idea of portable movies. I like the idea of reading a book instead. Are our lives getting too clogged with tech? It's a fair question for each of us to consider.

I can just see people going up a ski lift and watching a movie clip instead of looking at the scenery around them. How about a kid who is travelling through Yellowstone park and doesn't want to put down the PSP? That's sad.

I read before going to sleep every single night. Mostly science fiction. I'm reading Spider and Jeanne Robinson's Stardance trilogy right now.
