Question Sharp Aquos BDHP20U issues

I got this thing from amazon in early 2008 and it was refurbished. There hasn't been a firmware update for it since last October. It's played every movie since that update except for Crank 2 which just came out. I use it quite a bit and have to reset it every few weeks. Now I rent from netflix all the time and with Crank 2 I sent for a replacement disc and it didn't read the movie at all on either one. When I rented Taken it played fine, perfectly the first time and then I left the disc in and the player alone for a week and then on watching it again it stopped 80 percent of the way through. Now I just called Sharp to see about having it serviced and they said I could or I could wait for another firmware update. I was told there would be one but they couldn't say when. Does anyone have a suggestion? I was going to replace it for Christmas. Do you think I should tell netflix not to send blu-rays until then?

I just replaced my HP-20 with a slim PS3. Now I no longer have the "is it gonna play" anxiety. The HP-20 was too huge in size, and waaay to finicky when it comes to playing BDs. Plus you can't upgrade to BD-LIVE, which is actually kinda cool on some disks.

You may want to try the Sharp HP-22 their current top of the line model until the HP-52 comes out. The HP-22 is only about $249.00

Well my HP-20 is still under the extended warranty so maybe I should have them look at it. Amazon has the HP-22 as low as $150...if I can wait maybe someone will get me one for the holidays.

Default BDHP20U issues

This unit needs a firmware update. however, sharp has yet to put one out. I had an issue with the new Wolverine movie. I had to update this unit several months ago for the same reason. Its fairly easy, but not available.

I spoke to them on the phone and they assured me there'd be an update but could not say when.

My conversation's with Sharp's tech's say the opposite. The 20u is a number of years old. They have a number of more recent models available. They have NO intentions of issuing any NEW firmware for the 20u. Last F/W update was sometime in 2008.

It was October of 2008 actually. I do have my doubts about seeing new firmware.
I'm hoping to replace the player with http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/..._091209:header

Sorry but I tried to find the most recent firmware update (oct. 08) For some reason all the links for it were dead. The USA site also the Canadian site no longer carry the update we are looking for. Don't know why but the update for the 20u from this site is dead also.

Maybe someone else can help you out.

Not sure if it's old but the most current one on their site is HU9071500... It doesn't show under the drop down menu, so select other and type in the model number...

Default Dont switch to the HP22u

I bought the Sharp HP22u in May 2009. It worked great for about 3 weeks. Then blu rays started to not plaly and I got an invalid disc message. I tried putting a DVD in and then puting the Blu Ray in because of a thread I read on a message board. It actually worked some of the times the Blu Rays wouldnt play. Other times i would just waste an hour trying to get a disc to play. I have sent the unit in twice now and have spent hours on the phone with Sharp. They are telling me that there is nothing wrong with the unit. I tell them that the problem is intermitant and sometimes the player will work for a couple weeks then it starts acting up again. They refuse to send me another player or change out any pieces. So I guess it will be a nice $300 target for shooting practice now! Stay away from this unit and Sharp all together, cause if you have a problem you wont get it fixed

Most of the things I watch are from netflix.

I still haven't loaded the firmware that was just found on Sharp's site.

ok folks, for those of you watching this thread I installed HU9071500 over the weekend and rented Crank 2 again this week...I'm happy to say it played without a problem this time. It's a shame the movie wasn't that good.
