question about speaker wire/hdmi vs non hdmi audio

1) i have all my speaker wire wrapped together and tied with an elastic band behind my tv so it doesnt look like a jungle back there...does this affect the performance/sound i hear from my speakers?



2) also, on a side note, i have a very modest hdmi samsung upconvert dvd player with 3 ohm samsung speakers that attach to it for my bedroom, the dvd player has the option of HDMI AUDIO ON (which just projects from the 2 stereo speakers on my tv, so 2.0) or HDMI AUDIO OFF (which projects from the speakers and sub, so 5.1)

however, to me the hdmi audio on sounds much more crisp and detailed than the 5.1 hdmi off...is something wrong here?

also, when i have hdmi audio on every 10-15 secs it cuts out giving me silence for 2-3 seconds....can anyone help?
