Question questions about hookup onkyoyxrs606

I Am New Member Here As Well As New To The World Of Hi Def.i Just Recently Got A 46 Inch Lcd With A Ps3 And An Onkyo Reciever.now I Am Not Tech Smart Or Anything But I Was Wondering What To Set My Ps3 To In Audio Setup For The Best Results,is It Linear Pcm Or Bitstream. I Have The Lastest Firmware Update For The Ps3. Also I Know The Ps3 Decodes Hd Master Audio, And My Onkyo Decodes Both Hd Master Audio And Dolby Truehd.so Will That Display On The Reciever When One Of Those Codecs Are Playing Or Will It Say Something Else.any Help Will Be Appreciated? Welcome to the world of Blu ! I'm not tech savy myself. If you do not get a response to your question look up one of the AV moderators and PM one of them. They have helped a lot of folks in your situation. One name I remeber is Crackinheds something like that, could have misspelled no offence Crack.

PM = "Private Message".

While I'm still stuck in lossy audio land, I believe you'll want to set it to Linear PCM. This is of course assuming you're sending it via HDMI. It'll send everything to the Onkyo that way and you won't have to switch back and forth. The only thing you'll lose is the neat "DTS:MA-HD" lcd label on your display. The sound will be the exact same.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

so all i have to do is set the ps3 to linear pcm and is there anything im supposed to set the onkyo to cause when i set the ps3 to linear pcm i hit the display button on the ps3 remote and it says either dolby truehd or dtsma depending on the movie,but my reciever says in big letters multichannel and then on yop of that in smaller letters it says multi channelhdmi.and when i hit the display button on the reciever remote it says multi channel pcm? also do i have to set something under the ps3 menu in the sound department when i set it up via hdmi for example some choices are 5.1 linear 48 khz and a coulple other choices as well as the same for the 7.1 option.or is the way that i have it correct?thanks sorry for the hassle i just want to make sure i am taking full advantage of the hd experince.thanks.

Crackinhedz can definitely answer that stuff better than I, but I can answer one part:

It says "multichannel PCM" on your receiver because it can't tell what's being sent to it. There is no difference between it and if you bitstreamed it and it read the proper output. Since the PS3 can't bitstream DTS:HD but can decode it, you're better off setting it to PCM and letting the PS3 do all the work. The only alternative to that is to switch it every time you fire up a movie that has DTS:HD MA.

As for the PS3 audio settings- not too sure, but you'll want to check everything your receiver is capable of doing. Maybe check the manual on that one or someone else can assist better than I.

I was worried that I didn't have it right as I'm still limping along on lossy audio via optical on my receiver.
