Default DTS-HD Master Audio & PS3

Can movie that has "DTS-HD Master Audio" listed on the back cover (i.e., Die Another Day - Blu-ray) and doesn't mention regular DTS 5.1 still be heard through a tuner amp that just decodes DTS 5.1? Does PCM travel through the optical output on the Sony PS3?

Yes to the first question. PCM does travel through optical but only in 2 channel stereo. So to get surround you would be Pro Logic a PCM signal, which in the end, isn't that great.

If you want to utilize the HD audio tracks from the PS3, you'll need a receiver that accepts PCM audio via HDMI.

You could bitstream from the ps3 to your receiver, you won't get DTS-MA but you will get the DTS "core track" so yes it would work. You just won't get the HD audio. If you set it to pcm you can only get 2 channels through optical...Now if your receiver accepts pcm throught hdmi then set the ps3 to pcm and enjoy.

I did some quick research on your receiver, and it is a bare-bones type of receiver. I'm wondering what the "Comport" is on the back, and what it's used for as an input.

But as far as HD audio, you won't get either DTS HD-MA or TrueHD on your current receiver. It just isn't made to accept PCM from the PS3.

Thank you all for your replies. All of you have answered my mini-mind boggling question

Zman2k2: Thank you for the back panel graphic. The DMPORT is for the ipod dock that comes with the receiver/amp, 5 satalite speakers, & subwoofer.

Crakenhedz: Thank you for that info involving the checkmarks in the PS3 setup. I'm assuming by setting the output to bitstream, I will get 5.1 channels vs. setting to pcm output which only will send 2.0.

Thanks again to all who replied.
