Criterion The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973)

The Friends of Eddie Coyle Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Quote:
In one of the best performances of his legendary career, Robert Mitchum plays small-time gunrunner Eddie “Fingers” Coyle in an adaptation by Peter Yates of George V. Higgins’s acclaimed novel The Friends of Eddie Coyle. World-weary and living hand to mouth, Coyle works on the sidelines of the seedy Boston underworld just to make ends meet. But when he finds himself facing a second stretch of hard time, he’s forced to weigh loyalty to his criminal colleagues against snitching to stay free. Directed with a sharp eye for its gritty locales and an open heart for its less-than-heroic characters, this is one of the true treasures of 1970s Hollywood filmmaking—a suspenseful crime drama in stark, unforgiving daylight.

New, restored high-definition digital transfer, approved by director Peter Yates, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Audio commentary featuring Yates

PLUS: An essay by critic Kent Jones and a 1973 on-set profile of actor Robert Mitchum from Rolling Stone

I've been pining for an upgrade for several years, very pleased to see this locally-shot gem coming to BD.

A great, gritty masterpiece that I can't wait to see on Blu. An absolute classic!

Agreed. I love the film, and have been wanting a Blu-Ray upgrade for quite some time...

It's a shame they won't upgrade the extras. There was a behind the scenes featurette to promote the film as well as promotional radio interviews with Mitchum that were sent out on record from the original release that are still around, along with the trailer.

Very good news indeed. Great Mitchum performance. Now I'd take Secret Ceremony and Ryan's Daughter.

Including a paperback copy of the book would have been a nice touch - it's a slim one at under 200 pages.

Just finished watching this ... I love 70s films ... The stock just gave them a cool gritty look. I loved the film ... But it was a one watcher for sure. Mitchum was ok ... Felt like the movie aspired to be more than the source material. Overall I'd recommend it to anyone who like films from the 70s. Nowhere near as good as The French Connection ... But a different kind of film anyway.
