I have installed PowerDVD 8 Ultra and the system freezes when I try to play a disk from Disney. Cyberlink had me update my drivers, install a patch and do a manual uninstall then reinstall. PowerDvd will play other dvd fine. Can anyone advise or confirm a problem?

Something that couldn't hurt to try would be checking the firmware for your drive and making sure it's the most current. It seems the majority of (if not all of) the problems with PC Playback are all software related.
Software 1. Video card drivers - download from NVIDIA - not the OEM and definitely don't use the drivers that shipped with the card. 2. Motherboard chipset drivers - download from the chipset manufacturer. 3. DirectX - update and ensure you're at most current. Alot of Windows media extensions make calls to these APIs regardless if you are using anything that's really "DirectX" or not. 4. This normally starts the flames, but in my 20+ years of building and tinkering with PC stuff, I have never encountered an AMD box that worked the way it was supposed to....always glitches, and normally there were software workarounds to process around the problem in architecture design. There's a reason corporations and industry are 99.9% Intel houses on their Windoze and Linux boxes.... 5. The shiny side of the disc goes down - the painted side stays up. ![]() |

What O/S are you using? Are you using a 64 bit or 32 bit. What version of PowerDVD are you using - are you using the OEM (the one that came with the player) or are you using the full version bought directly from Cyberlink?

Vista Ultimate 32bit, I am using PowerDVD 8 Ultra downloaded directly from Cyberlink on May 17, 2008. The disk will start and play the previews and then it becomes "Non-responsive". The same thing happens when "Top Menu" is selected. Drivers have been updated with the latest I can locate.

Well I'm not sure of a solution but I do know I played National Treasure 2 no problem just the other day with PowerDVD 8 Ultra.

I think it must be some small conflict with my paticular system. I loaded PowerDVD 8 on a XP machine and all seems to function. I would like to fix the problem instead of just discarding the program. If anyone has any sugestions I would like to hear them.
You say "the shiny side goes down" I would think all the information would spill out of all the tiny holes in the disk......go figure. Thanks for the input. |

The next thing to look at would be any other media programs on your system that might be conflicting with the playback software.
You might unload quicktime, real player, VLC, etc. and do a reinstall of the DVD Playback software - maybe something was hogging a resource? There's a free little app readily available called "procexp". Think of it as the windows task manager, but on steroids, where it can show you every program running on your system at any point in time, in addition to showing you all the files and calls that program is trying to make in realtime (and the system resouces occupied by each event). You might be able to chase down your problem event in this fashion. Have you checked your system error logs yet immediately after this offucrs? If it's having a recognizable failure when this is occuring - there may be data to help you isolate the problem there as well. And btw....generally when finishing a statement with " ![]() |

Have you got an SLI rig? the motherboard is so wondering if you have and that may be the problem? Also try seeing if there is a BIOS update as i had a problem recently with Linux seeing the DVD drive i had and a BIOS update fixed it (it too was an ASUS board).
