Talking DTS Master Audio

I have a Yamaha 3800 AV that is 7.1, when I play a BD with DTS Master Audio 5.1 option the display icon shows that all 7.1 channels are playing. When I play a BD that has True HD 5.1 or PCM 5.1 it displays it as 5.1, if it is 7.1 it displays it as 7.1. I called yamaha on the DTS Master Audio display icon always showing all 7.1 channels. they said that DTS Master Audio BD with 5.1 will play 7.1 if your system has the capability. Is this true or did I just get hosed with this answer?

some receivers have the ability to matrix 5.1 into 7.1 (yours being one of them)

...not sure if that is the answer to the question here?

What listening mode do you have it set on?

What BD player do you have?

that is the correct answer. if your yamaha is set to auto, it will always play 7.1 if you have the 7.1 setup(when applicable), and yes it uses a matrix for the back surrounds. It is not discrete but it is still very good. Usually it uses Dolby Pro Logic for the back two.

Either PLII or Neo:6

PL would just give a mono signal to the rears

Both the Yamaha 1800 and 3800 have a bug in the front panel display logic regarding DTS-HD 5.1 audio displaying as 7.1.

For DTS-HD material, regardless of how many channels are actually present in the mix, the front panel display will always report 7.1. This only occurs with DTS-HD material and is only related to the front panel display; the actual number of speakers engaged is correct. Also, the On Screen Display (OSD) reports the number of channels correctly.

Yamaha has publicly acknowledged this bug and has issued a statement that they do not plan to release a firmware fix for this issue.

Note however, that if you elect to use the additional front presence speakers (a proprietary Yamaha feature), there is another bug regarding DTS-HDMA. Because the front presence speakers and the rear surrounds share the same internal amplifiers, they cannot play simultaneously. The receiver is supposed to automatically select which pair to enable based on the number of channels in the current source mix (5.1 = front presence speakers enabled; 6.1/7.1 = rear surrounds enabled).

Unfortunately, the recevier gets confused with DTS-HD 5.1 material and enables the rear surrounds instead of the front presence speakers, resulting in no sound from either.

Many users have contacted Yamaha regarding this second issue, but to date Yamaha refuses to admit the bug even exists. (Despite the fact that users worldwide have confirmed it).
