Okay I have 33 Blu-ray discs and I need a surround system because I am only using my 32" VIZIO for sound. I have a 80 gig PS3 and the new Magnavox Blu-ray disc player. Can some one give me advice on buying a cheap surround system I dont care if its one in a box. I havent got much money because just got out of school. My limit is $300.00. Like I said something to get better sound than my TV for now.

crackinhedz will probably tell you to get the Onkyo HITB, which comprises of the Onkyo 605 and surround speakers. That's about US$200 than your current budget.

![]() Don't spend so much on your source equipment that you have no money left to spend on the pieces of equipment that you actually see and hear. ![]() :EDIT: Accessories4Less has the Marantz 5001 (refurb) for $329.00 (Since your PS3 does the decoding, you don't need a receiver that decodes the codecs - this is the best receiver that you can get for the money) and the Polks from Amazon for $232.00 totalling $561.00 - that's a good deal and you will experience what your BD's can really do Last edited by prerich; 06-17-2008 at 02:06 PM. |

Wow, so many suggestions. Check out my sig. You can get the Onkyo 605 for $255 and also the Polk 5.1 for $237. Your total would come to $492. That's probably the best sound you can get for under $500. A $300 budget isn't good enough. It really can make a big difference in what you can get for your money when you expand your budget a little more. If you can, return that Magnavox. It's no better than the PS3. Just go and say you want a refund and you'll get your money back.

Thanks guys on your help. I will save the $300.00 and sell about 50 DVDs out of my collection. Out of all the recomendations which will do the best job. I have heard Onkyo does great and the others as well but give me some more advice. Thanks.

I'd listen to a few, or at least go by looks...... complete strangers' opinions will vary so much...... Also it kinda depends on what your "goal" is..... All HT/Gaming, to get sound "now" ... pretty much any Entry Level AVR that can accept PCM will get you where you want to go.... if you want to "build" that's a whole other ball of wax. Check that Yamaha and Onkyo, and get whatever one you can get a better deal on..... I don't think you'll be disappointed with either of them.

Vizio sound sucks.
a HTIB will suck also. I actually bought a cheep HTIB (with DVD) and then just took the speakers and then bought a nice reciever that was a year out of date and during a sale (went from around $500 to $75 at Fry's. It took about 6 months to find a deal like that, but it works). The speakers are absolute garbage, but it is better than 2.0 from the Vizio. Now I am using the same wait and look for speakers. When I find a deal that I can afford, I will buy it. Right now I cant even afford good deals, but you never know when you will find a deal you cant pass up... MY advice is to wait for the times when you can find out of date stuff that they have to push off the shelf to make room for the new hotness, then try and get them to give you a little extra (I can normally talk them down on that kind of thing). My advice would be to lower your budget to super slim ($50 and save the other $250) and find something really janky that will work for now, and then start saving to get around $600+ to buy something to tide you over until you can get something good. Baby steps. People here seem to forget that a bad system normally kicks the shit out of not having anything. |

Bring back the Magnavox and use the PS3 as your BD player. Put $299 in your pocket, your budget is now $600, you buy your Onkyo 605 and some shitty speakers. Then slowly budget in speaker swapping. Fronts, sides, center, sub. In whatever order you like. 6 months from now you could easily have full HD sound.
