Default What If....

i hope i do not jinx myself for saying this but as of right now, my PS3 is running like a champ! I have upgraded the harddrive to a 160gb from the original 40gb.

Now my question is....if anything were ever to happen to my baby and i had to send it back to sony for repair, would i have to change the hard drive back out and put the 40gb back in before i sent it off?

Changing the hard drive does not void your warranty so why would you have to change it back to the oem one before you sent it in? Have any of you sent your ps3 back with your upgraded hard drive in place? What kind of experience did you have?

I am itching to put that 40gb drive to use as an external drive for my comp but don;t want to load it with goodies if i have to turn around and delete everything so i can re-install it in my ps3 if the worst happens.

I'm assuming that you'd have to send it back exactly how it was purchased to comply with a factory warranty.

You might need to put the original one back in case they replace the unit you sent in with a new or refurbished one.

You already know the answer. Why risk it. Situations like this your just asking for trouble. Seems to easy for some kind of screw up to happen, ie. they detest the warranty since it's been changed, you fight them over policy and now your PS3 is put on even longer backlog to go through administrative paperwork to determine what is to be done while you frantically e-mail and attempt to call and contact someone. Or you don't get the drive back and no one there knows what happened to it, ect...

I personally wouldn't risk it, but then I've played with fire time and time again...

Don't sell or repurpose the original drive until the warranty ends. After that it doesn't matter.

Attention folks...

You do not void your warranty if you replace the existing harddrive!! Sony tells you right in the manual how to do it yourself. If you run into any hardware problems down the road, I think it would be good to have the original on hand to swap back in if it needs to go in for repairs...but, even that, Sony's customer support is pretty great, if you call them and tell them you have a larger harddrive installed, I am pretty sure you can make note of it in a letter and include it with the unit when you send it in.
