Criterion Bicycle Thieves (1948)

Bicycle Thieves Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Quote:
New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Working with De Sica, a collection of interviews with screenwriter Suso Cecchi d’Amico, actor Enzo Staiola, and film scholar Callisto Cosulich
Life as It Is, a program on the history of Italian neorealism, featuring scholar Mark Shiel
Documentary from 2003 on screenwriter and longtime Vittorio De Sica collaborator Cesare Zavattini, directed by Carlo Lizzani
Optional English-dubbed soundtrack
PLUS: A book featuring essays by critic Godfrey Cheshire and filmmaker Charles Burnett, classic writing by Zavattini and critic André Bazin, and reminiscences by De Sica and his collaborators
Quote:

Hailed around the world as one of the greatest movies ever made, the Academy Award–winning Bicycle Thieves, directed by Vittorio De Sica, defined an era in cinema. In poverty-stricken postwar Rome, a man is on his first day of a new job that offers hope of salvation for his desperate family when his bicycle, which he needs for his work, is stolen. With his young son in tow, he sets off to track down the thief. Simple in construction and profoundly rich in human insight, Bicycle Thieves embodies the greatest strengths of the Italian neorealist movement: emotional clarity, social rectitude, and brutal honesty.

For those wondering, it doesnt show up anywhere until you search for it when adding films to the "My Collection" part.

I'm good with my Arrow release.

Okay to be honest I'm salty because I bought it like a month ago. I knew it would be announced right after I bought it. In fact I posted somewhere to expect it to be announced this month oh well

Woo! Day one.

Now they should release La Ciociara (aka Two Women) for good measure.

well, the italian bluray seems much better than Arrow.
Let's hope Criterion will be that way too.

I would be excited to see Two Women released. My local library only has a DVD with the English dub, which is not how I want to watch the film.

I'm excited for a Bicycle Thieves Blu-ray, though!

I don't know about Arrow release, but Criterion' is sourced from a new 4K restoration.

Awesome. Arrow's definitely isn't, it leaves a lot to be desired. It does have some solid extras though.

I usually wait for the Barnes & Noble sale but, I'm not going to be able to wait 4 months for this (this film is near the top of my blu-ray wishlist)

What the hell does "classic writing" means?

The Arrow is simply a big joke. The Italian is near-perfection; its resto dates back to 2008, mostly funded by Casinò di Venezia; it cost about 135.000€. The main restorer says it was done at 2k.

However, I wasn't able to find out news about a 4k resto, so I guess it's from Criterion. I don't think detail can be improved much (or at all), to be honest, but I hope they at least fixed the boosted contrast in some scenes (like this http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a...=35962&i=3&l=0).

I have the Italian one. It looks great. However it does have a few "skips" that are noticeable. I think that it's cause the frames were missing, as is sometimes the case with these older movies. I don't know if the same will be the case for the Criterion.

In any case, for me the Italian release definitely looks good enough not to demand an upgrade. I also prefer its artwork.
