Default Animation on Blu-ray worth the extra $10?

Just a little question I wanna throw out for anyone who cares to comment. As far as the cartoons go these days ( Dreamworks, Pixar, etc. ). Is it worth the extra 10 or so dollars to buy these movies in Blu-Ray format? I will be honest I have watched the same movie in both Blu-Ray and original format on my set up and cant really pick out much difference. Dont get me wrong I am a huge fan of Blu-Ray. Just not sure its worth it on the animation.

i think so.
As an animation fan, I have never seen a 3D animation look as beautiful or perfect as on Blu-ray! It is well worth the extra price.
As far as 2D goes, it depends on the 2D. For those highly detailed videos, like Paprika, it is definitely worth it. But others, like Justice League, you might not find the price difference worth it. I am not saying these kinds of titles do not look awesome on Blu-ray, cause they do, but I am saying that the average consumer of these titles could care less about the HD content, although I know that there is a market for it and it is growing. Some of these lack the details and the subtlety that other higher quality animations have.

So in most cases, animation is worth it on HD, the details and the textures and the subtlety comes out well.

If you want to see one of the best Blu-rays ever released to date, look at Pixar. Seriously. Because the source is digital, and the entire world is made in a computer, everything is highly controlled and looks fantastic. Perfectly sharp and detailed. Cars and Ratatouille are so amazing to watch, you will fall in love with Blu-ray and never buy animations on DVD again.

I totally agree with you. After watching Ratatouille, Cars, Bee Movie and the Beowulf import, I won't ever buy any computer animated film on DVD again. I will have to say that the HD previews I've seen of the Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray that is coming out later this year have failed to impress me, but maybe those aren't true depictions of what it will look like, I don't know.

Most certainly worth it. Animation on Blu-ray, in general, seems to look sharper and more clear than live-action films. So definitely.

Recommendations (in terms of PQ): Dinosaur, Happy Feet, The Wild, Ratatouille
Recommendations (in terms of movie quality): Happy Feet, possibly Dinosaur

If anything animation benefits more from Blu-ray resolution than even regular films. BDs like the Pixar movies are direct digital ports of the source. I would say most well informed people would consider Ratatouille and Cars as the best picture quality seen on Blu-ray so far.

Even better if you have a 120hz HDTV....most of the time I can't stand having Cinemotion on, but, with animation...it is phenomenal!!

If you don't see a difference in Enchanted Intro DVD vs Blu-ray you need either : a new display or glasses.

OP,
What movie are you watching?
How are you set up?
Are you sure you are looking at it at 1080p?
If you can not see a clear difference between the DVD of any of the movies listed here and the Blu-ray... you have something set up wrong.

I agree. I have Cars blu and the regular version (for the kids). The difference between the two is what helped me to decide to never purchase a regular dvd (for myself) EVER again.

yeah with all studios behind Blu now, I will never purchase a DVD again, unless it's like a volume of Family Guy. All movies will be bought on Blu, back to the Op's question, my TV is nothing special (720p/1080i), but I think just the color palette on Blu vs DVD on animated titles is amazing. I want Over the Hedge on Blu, as I think it was one of the best looking computer animated movies ever.

Same for me, except I don't have kids.

I bought the DVD because I liked the movie, and sometimes I think I'm just a big kid (not only do I have Aladdin on DVD, but it's also one of my favorite movies ). When having a choice of 8 free BD's, I picked up Cars and Ratatouille, then instantly went home to compare the BD Cars to the DVD, and was really surprised by the difference. Since I'm no videophile, the best I can say is that the colors are just so vivid, and everything looks incredibly sharp. Even seeing the Disney logo in HD in the beginning impressed me.

It's at that point that I decided BD's are actually worth it (in most cases), and is the reason why in the 7 months since, I've only purchased 2 DVDs (Spinal Tap and Crouching Tiger, the latter of which I'm anxiously waiting for on BD )
