I have done some research on 1080p HDTV, to ensure that my PS3/Blu-ray player will work in in real 1080p(taking into consideration that only a few games are desighned to support 1080p, ie.2KNBA07 and 1080p movies). I am a bit confused. I have been told by multiple people that most 1080p tvs are not really 1080p. They talk about most tv's not being able to accept a 1080p signal. I have also found people that are having issues with those "fake" 1080p sets and the PS3, ie.They set the PS3 to 1080p and their 1080p tv says it doesn't support it and the screen flickers. I have also heard about HDCP for the PS3, do all tvs support HDCP? Should I care? Is there a special cord, ie.HDMI 1.3 that I need to send the real 1080p signal to a real 1080p tv? How do I know if the TV can accept a 1080p signal the way it was meant to?(no scaling from 1080i or 720p) I have heard way to much technical jargon lately and I seem to have baffled Future Shop with this question. I just need the right tv and don't want to have to try out a few sets before it works, any help? Please!

I dont know if this answers the question but on the PS3 games and movies you must have a HDMI cable to get 1080p.Also the game has to be made in 1080p format and if your TV doesnt support 1080p it will play in 1080i.You also have to set the PS3 settings to 1080p so that it knows your TV supports it.I know my TV doesnt support it because when I checked 1080p I got no picture at all.So I just have to use 1080i which is a really good picture anyways!

What people mean about the fake 1080p TV's is that they don't ACCEPT 1080p in through HDMI. There are some TV's(older models) that support 1080p but NOT through HDMI. For example, you could get 1080p if it was broadcasted over cable or satelite(which no providers currently do to my knowledge), but for your PS3 and Blu-Ray movies to be in 1080p, you would need it to accept 1080p in through HDMI. TV's will specify which do or do not accept 1080p through HDMI.
I made sure to get one of those- Samsung HL-S5687W. If you are looking for a bigger sized HDTV(which is essential if you really want to enjoy the 1080p), I would HIGHLY reccommend this one. I bought mine off Amazon.com, and it's probably much lower now, maybe around $1400? Plus, if you buy a Samsung HDTV you get $100 to NFL shop, this is great even if you're not a football fan(makes a great gift, or exchange with someone who can use it for cash). PLUS I got a Samsung XM player($100 value) free when I bought my TV, though I'm not sure if that offer still exists. Free shipping from Amazon and I got it in 4 days. I had a small scratch and got $200 back. I highly reccommend it. Anyway, I sound like I'm a Samsung businessperson. Pretty much, just do some research on a TV that you want to make sure it supports 1080p IN via HDMI. |

Nice, thanks a lot. It makes sense finally, so basically new tvs are good. I was hearing about sets that say 1080p but weren't able to get the signal, it was from just this november, but I huess it could have been complaints from older tvs. This is an amazing link on the topic:
