It's possible there's dust on the lens preventing it from reading discs. The Blu-ray lens is more sensitive to dust than a normal CD/DVD lens. A laser lens cleaner will probably solve this issue.

Only thing i can think of other than fixing it for 150 would be...Selling it to a unexpected gamestop...sometimes they dont check the consoles they just give you store credit or cash...If you want another ps3 get the store credit...and keep hold of the receipt...

Can your friend buy another 40gb ps3 and use that receipt? I cannot recall if the receipt has the ps3 model specific information. You could also check around here to see if anyone is willing to give up or sell their receipt.

I sold the bar code off of my PS3 so probably anything is possible.

If he bought it from Best Buy he can probably get them to reprint the receipt. Maybe at other stores too.

If he has his receipt it'll be free to fix but otherwise he has to come up with $150 Problem is he threw the receipt away. Is there anything that anyone knows of that could help him out? It's bad enough he won't be able to play COD or GTA IV until it's fixed... he really doesn't wanna put up $150 too. Thanks for all your help!

Just tell your friend to call Sony and if he bought it within a year then it's in warranty. Call Sony about the loading issues and they will send you a prepaid box with instructions. The instructions states if you loss your receipt to contact them so they can verify through there database.

Funny, this just happened to me and a few other people, all with 40g and all within the last week.

A person on the boards recommended to hold the eject button for 30 seconds while the unit is powered on and has no disc in. That temporarily fixed my problem, but then it came back. =(

should ask them if they need your hard drive in the PS3, if not take it out.
