I am currently building a home theatre and am getting a JVC DLA-RS1 projector for video and have a decent 6.1 speaker set-up. I have an older but high end amplifier, a Yamaha DSP-AX1 which is capable of receiving up to 6.1 analogue input for example SACD's.
I am wondering if there is a BD player on the market which is capable of decoding DD True-HD and the DTS HD equivalent into PCM 5.1 (or even 6.1?) and then hooking that up to my old amplifier? I have heard that some people have succeeded doing this whereas others are only able to receive stereo sound or experience odd things like the LFE channel disappearing. So either I keep my old high end amplifier, which I would prefer to do and use a new, high-end BD player or I buy a newer but cheaper amplifier which supports Dolby True HD, DTS-HD, PCM, etc. and use a PS3 to play my BD discs (I hear the PS3 is a fairly decent player which I could also use for gaming). Any idea on what I should do? |

yeah the PS3 decodes DD true HD and DTS HD into PCM 5.1, but in order to effectively communicate that to your Yamaha, I believe you need an HDMI connection from the PS3 to the Yamaha, as optical cable can't support PCM. So if you're Yamaha doesn't have HDMI input then you'll probably need an HDMI receiver, like the Onkyo 605

I have heard however that it is possible to get PCM 5.1 from newer BD players. I don't intend to use a PS3 with my older amplifier anyway as I would then need HDMI which my amplifier dos not support. So my two options are:
PS3 and a new amplifier with HDMI support or Old Yamaha DSP AX-1 with a new BD-player that can decode and output 5.1 PCM successfuly from BD movies |

I have been searching high and low for this answer as if you pull up the most recent specs on the Samsung website, it does say the BD-P1400 has decoding capabilities for DTS-HD & Dolby True HD, but what I am hearing in a thread I started on this topic in this same forum is that it can only bitstream DTS-HD MA but internally decode everything else. Were you talking about getting DTS-HD HR or maybe I am just wrong and confused?? I had purchased mine back in December 2007 but was not sure it it applied to this model version. The good news is I got mine well after the first run came out and the BD-P1400 I have is also HDMI 1.3 compliant. OK so now I go and find this: Quote:
