Default 2014 Blu ray players.

Has anyone heard anything from CES about 2014 Blu ray players? Any new models coming out from Sony, Panasonic ect?

New Sony players:

http://blog.sony.com/press/sony-unve...-disc-players/

http://store.sony.com/sony-dual-core...ay-DVD-Players

It looks like the S6200 replaces the 790 as the new flagship model.

Some people on the internet are fretting that it's a step down from the 790, but it looks like the only major difference is the loss of the dual HDMI out (the marketing says nothing about super bit mapping, but I suspect it's just a standard feature now).

Thanks for posting this von_Levi. By the looks of it nothing has really changed from Sony for their 2014 Blu Ray players so I guess I will stick with my Sony S5100. I have no issue doing that due to its been flawless anyway. But again thanks for posting the links.

The newer models with the angled tops are so ugly! Love my S790. I am sort of looking to replaced my old 570 in the kids room though.

I was shocked SixSpeed that Sony didnt change the design for 2014 on their Blu ray players and I am surprised they dropped the duel HDMI port that was featured on their S790. Personally I like the angled design on my S5100 but like the performance more. Its been very solid performance wise and thats one reason why I am keeping it. NOW if I could find a S790 at a reasonable price I would jump on it.

I think Sony is accepting how few people care about 3D (pretty much the only use for the dual port is for A/V receivers that cannot passthrough 3D), and that the bulk of hardware sales are going to come from people not wanting to spend more than $150 -- it's a way to cut costs (and I imagine the people willing to spend over $200 are all buying Oppos).

This relates a LOT to my Question that i want to start a tread on and ask but cant cause i just joined (ironically to create said thread and get answers)...so here it is:

So my family just upgraded the living room TV (42 inch 1080P HDTV) and its time to get a Blu-Ray player for it.
I would normally probably just look up reviews (on some trusted sites) and find the best review scored BR-player and buy that...but CES 2014 just happened and they showed off new BR-Players. So what do you guys think? Are there any shown at CES '14 that looked like great deals?

(As for what im looking for; no 3-D, yes internal wifi and apps. In the around $100 range but ideally <$100 would be fantastic)

If nothing from the CES 2014 is worth waiting for, feel free to tell me the best 2013 model(s) that have everything i want and maybe have been price dropped cause they are at the end of their production.

Thanks

Sony S5100 is going for less than $90 right now. If you can wait about 1 or 2 months all the new players will be out then with reviews.

The S5100 is an all around excellent Blu ray player. Mine plays pretty much everything I throw at it.

"TRILUMINOS™ Display technology": This doesn't make sense. The player isn't a display unit. It is a player. You want a screen display to do that sort of thing and it should be built into the screen display. If you had some pre-processing, but you have a crap display, it makes no difference whether you have pre-processing or not.

Overall, I am going to stick with my S5100 player. 4K upscaling is still pointless for me, considering I have no intention of getting a new display. :|
It seems that the new models focus a lot on downloading and Internet stuff, which I don't use at all. I am all about the physical disc format, which I really only need a basic unit to use.

Streaming has become much more than just an alternate movie rental platform. Increasingly, TV shows are being released via streaming and/or made available on streaming the same day as they air. Heck, if Aereo manages to prevail in court you'll probably see all of the sports leagues aggressively move to streaming their live broadcasts.

Simply put, streaming is the future for media distribution. Physical discs will never go away, but it's market share will decline while streaming increases (I know things are changing when my parents, on their own, bought a Roku for Amazon Prime, Netflix and HBO GO).

While I agree with your assessment that streaming is going to be the future for the masses, I'm not sure that the streaming capabilities belong in either a Blu-ray player, receiver or TV. Since those devices are relatively expensive (even though many BD players are remarkably inexpensive) and because the technology and UIs are constantly changing, I think it makes more sense for that capability to be part of a relatively inexpensive external device, whether that's a Roku stick, Apple TV, Google Chromecast or whatever might come in the future. So far, the UIs built into TVs, Blu-rays and receivers tend to be pretty lame.

Also, the redundancy costs consumers money. Do we really need pretty much the same services in a BD player, receiver AND a TV?

Regardless of what you think, streaming IS going to be in every device. Consumers expect it.

As for the UI, the new Netflix app for the Sony 6200 is excellent. In fact, overall performance is just as good if not better than Netflix on the Roku.
