Default Best Japanese sci-fi movies to watch?

Hi all, I recently started watching Japanese movies. I love how they all seem to have really clever story lines. I just saw 'GANTZ 1 and 2' and I just started watching 'Space Battleship Yamato' and I'm really enjoying it.

I've seen Cyborg She and that was amazing!

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad.

Well, it does have "engineered super-zombies" and a mad scientist.

Probably not what you're looking for, but one of the best Sci-Fi animes I've seen is "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". You can get it pretty cheaply at Amazon UK.

I hope you enjoy them!

Mind Game is only on Japanese dvd with English subtitles - it is worth every penny it costs.

Avalon is on usa dvd and Japanese bluray (with English subs too).

Metropolis is only on usa english subbed/dubbed dvd (there's a japanese blu but no english subs/dub).

Also to add is the awesome Space Adventure Cobra movie on usa dvd - it's sort of similar to the wackiness of Guardians of the Galaxy. Miyazaki was involved with the film as well.

And I forgot to add the greatest Japanese movie/show which is Miyazaki's show Future Boy Conan - it's like an awesome epic 12 hour movie. The only english-subtitled dvds are from Malaysia (aka semi-official/ semi-pirate). This show was the best thing that Miyazaki ever did. And for the record, im not a fan of Japanese anime series - I dont watch them or have patience for them.

Of course, the mentioned Battle Royale is required viewing, but you could also try The Returner (2002) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339579/

Thanks! I'll be sure to take a look at every suggestion!

I found Cyborg She amazing. Is there anything similar to this in terms of quality of story?

It's still not on blu-ray, but "Sayonara Jupiter".
It is not just a Toho sci-fi epic, but also the worst movie I have ever seen.

Pretty much everything that is wrong about making a movie is done here. Worth watching.

I think Casshern is pretty amazing. It's disappointing that there isn't a bd with english subtitles.

Absolutely! I have the director's following film, Goemon, on Blu and it looks amazing. Casshern would be a demo disc if done properly.

Criterion in the US put out an Eclipse DVD set WHEN HORROR CAME TO SHOCHIKU: this includes GOKE, X FROM OUT SPACE, THE LIVING SKELETON and GENOCIDE. It's one of my favorite collections and I watch many Japanese films of all genres. Coincidently, I watched GENOCIDE last night and it is one of the weirdest, most messed up, insane and seemingly drug-addled horror flick I've ever seen. I cannot recommend this set enough if you're region free!

I'd also suggest one of Park Chan Wook's "forgotten" films I'M A CYBORG BUT THAT'S OK. I suppose it's more of a science fiction love story than horror.

Never thought of Battle Royale as science fiction.
