Interesting observation. Last week Target had the blu-ray of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (the Rankin-Bass thing) for ten bucks. I always had a soft spot for that one, so I picked it up. The PQ seemed quite good. Last night CBS aired it in HD. I don't have HD cable but I do use an antenna for a handful of channels. I decided to do an a/b comparison of the blu-ray and the broadcast. The broadcast version was noticeably sharper and had brighter colors. That...surprised me.

when posting this type of question, you should always include all gear associated with the issue by model/brand and any special (or any for that matter) settings used. this helps person answering said questions to give you a better answer.
also, everyones gonna ask you what gear your using and that waste your time and theirs. so throw that information up so folks can be quicker with answers and better answers at that. ![]() |

I figured that since I was observing the image through the same display (Panasonic Viera Plasma 42") at the same setting (I tried various PQ settings and compared each) that it would provide enough of a similarity to judge the source material. By all accounts, it seemed that the CBS broadcast was using a newly struck print or remaster. It was a pretty clear difference. BTW, the player is a PS3.

The settings are not that much of an issue since both sources are using the same parameters he says. The sources are different though. The broadcast naturally has more pumped up color than BluRay in general and they're likely amping the signal which can look sharper to many people. I always have lower color settings for BD than I do for cable but I like BD to look more natural.
