Default Rumor? DVD death in December 2009...

So my neighbor, who knows nothing about Blu-Ray or that I am even a collector, mentioned off hand that he was watching CNN the other day and there was a report that movie studios whould stop putting anything new out on DVD in December 2009 and go Blu-Ray exclusively...

I have not seen or heard anything like this...anyone?

My guess is that is just a projection or something, which may seem valid.

It depends when demand for DVD gets too low, and the demand for Blu Ray gets high enough, that DVD distribution is no longer viable. December 2009 may just be forecasting that demand change.

I'm not so sure that the studios should stop producing DVD's that early. Many people haven't gotten BD players or even HDTV's yet. People shoudn't be forced on BD just yet. They have to wait until the price of both BD players and full HDTV's goes down. Then the people will decide, and decide good when purchising for BD.

Major CE's not producing DVD players anymore given the margins .. and only producing Blu-ray players at some point in 2009 is the only thing I've read that makes sense.

DVD will be viable for a long time to come. There will surely be smaller studios that will enjoy using DVD to get their movies out. Also, there will be plenty of people who only have DVD for some time to come.

Well I think Blu-ray is growing faster than we think maybe? I was watching the news today and they were talking about aliens and one of the newscasters said he just watched Signs on Blu-ray. I was like, "That's not even out yet, how'd he see it?" lol I think maybe DVD sales might drop drastically next year, but it won't come to a complete stop.

There's no way DVD will die that soon.

Very doubtful a studio would do that. VHS was still selling in large numbers as late as 2003, long after dvd had been on the market. As long as there is demand for dvds the studios will sell them. I do think Blu-ray sales will overtake dvd sales sooner than most people think.

DVD's are too ingrained in society to be obsolete that quickly.

There are some reports that say that some higher end outlets project that blu-ray players will outsell dvd in the next 45 days. So i think the transition is going on a lot faster than some people anticipated.

But until players hit $199.99 it wont be into full swing.

Since all current blu-ray players are backwards compatible with DVD, and this will likely continue for a long time in the future, I suspect DVD will be around for a long time (possibly even outliving blu-ray if a "better" hi-def format comes around). The installed base of DVD players is very large.

45 rpm and 33 1/3 rpm records at one time were involved in a format war to replace 78's. Since the two formats could be played on combo players, and each format had it's own advantages, they co-existed for decades. DVD and blu-ray could possibly co-exist for a long time. It is likely, however, that at some time in the future (likely 4-5 years), studios may stop releasing current movies on DVD.

Default All's Quiet on the Techno Front...

Quick... somebody check AVS to see if they're all abuzz with how superior DVD is to Blu-ray, and how DVD will ultimately win the war...

Then we'll know the rumor of DVD death is true...

I imagine higher end outlets only sell higher end DVD players... and who would buy a higher end dvd player anymore?
