Question When they add more layers to Blu-ray Discs...

Will it be possible for a simple firmware update or, will you not be able to play anything over 50 Gigs on the PS3? Just curious as, I remember the specs saying they could go up to 200 GB or more if I remember correctly.

The people that said that said they have made it possible for more layers have claimed that it would just take an update to existing players.

Since we're likely waiting until 2010 for the LOTR films on Blu Ray, I'd be thrilled if this technology comes to fruition by then.

You will not see any commercial discs over BD-50, and the likelyhood of BD-75/100/200 even showing up in any kind of large and/or affordible quantity as writeables is unlikely.

If on the off chance they do put out 75+ gig movies, is there a cap on megabytes per second for current hdmi cables or what? What is the cap on possible out put in terms of MBPS for current HDMI cables/PS3?

The Blu-ray format has a maximum of 48mbps total per second of which a maximum of 40 can be video and 20 of audio

Every time they talk of adding layers, I just imagine this like 10 inch thick disk with layer upon layer that is taller then the PS3!

I just wonder about what the error rate would be on something like that. The more layers you have the more exponential the chance of a failure is. With one or two layers you have x amount of chance per layer, then you have to multiply that chance of failure for each additional layer, and the odds become impossibly low to get a decent yield of disks.

The double layer disc is the same as a dvd if not thinner.

Extra layers mean lower yields, as was said above.

Besides, 50GB is great. I do agree that more would be all the better, but 50 offers 2 hours 18 mins at absolute max quality. More pratically, you can still have a 3 1/2 hour film at excellent quality, say 28Mbps for video, 3 for the lossless audio and 0.7 each for a couple lossy tracks.

Wicky: Is there anything that could possibly need 20Mbps for audio? Highest I've seen was about 7; a couple movies have PCM about that high.

A BD-Audio centered disc

192/48 tracks, heck I'd love to see something where there is the main in 192/48, then 96/24 karaoke tracks for each instrument and the vocalist
