Default The future of consoles...

Here's an interesting excerpt on the future of consoles by pretty much the top analysts/consultants in the gaming industry:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...uggle-for-xbox

Quote:
Analysts warn of "struggle" for Xbox

Senior industry analysts have voiced concerns over the future of Microsoft's Xbox business, labeling the US firm's attempts to market 360 to casual audiences "disastrous", and predicting that the console will "start to struggle in the market" over the coming year.

Speaking during a panel session at last month's Nordic Game 2008 conference in Malmo, Sweden, analysts covering the UK, Europe and North America were called upon to assess the current state of the global games market, and predict key trends for the next 12-18 months. And for Microsoft, the picture in their crystal ball was anything but rosy.

"When you look at an installed base basis, the Xbox 360's going to come in third place when all's said and done," said DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole. "The concern I would have with a company like Microsoft is, one of these days they're going to have to make a profit on this business otherwise why are they in it?"

Very interesting to actually see what is _really_ going on behind the scenes in the gaming industry. I love that site because it tells it how it is and doesn't fanboy it all up. It's a strictly business industry site that deals in what is realistically happening for the benefit of the games industry. Hopefully it hasn't already been posted... I couldn't find it. I like the article linked from it as well concerning how BD is outpacing DVD for it's current position in lifespan.

A risk they put the wii in the closet? I'd put that as typical.

MS has been tragically unable since the beginning to understand that the US male is not typical internationally

The Xbox 360 may have been profitable if they didn't have the Red Ring of Death which cost them money on everyone that failed inside the original warranty and then an extra $1 billion to fix them outside of the warranty and extended the warranty to 3 years which could cost them even more. I am not sure that paying for exclusives sold that many more consoles for Microsoft. If Microsoft doesn't make a broken console they may get it right next time.

I think, that SONY has always been ahead of the pack, I mean look at it, Sony's PS3, is much further ahead in quality than the XBOX was, Sony did what they did best, Make Electronics, Microsoft makes Operating systems, the quality of which is not always the best, but thats another debate. MS has proved that the XBOX has failed in many categories between the constant RRoD issues, the failure of HD-DVD, among other things. There is a lot of truth to what was written, Sony PS owners are very loyal to their brand, I myself owned a PS, PS2, and now a PS3. I have owned other consoles obviously, from Nintendo, and Sega, but never have I owned something that is provides this level of entertainment, while giving me the opportunity to play DVDs, BD, CDs, and other media. Also, in the future, I see more opportunities for the Playstation Owner, I mean, look at Bioshock, obviously the developers for this game have realized there is a huge untapped market in Playstation ownership, and they figured they would milk the opportunity. They may begin to realize now that people are just jumping at the bit to purchase an XBox 360, IMHO, who would? It's old Technology! The PS3 games coming out aren't utilizing the Cell Processors full potential yet, just think as the technology improves and gets better, I think the games will be much better and cleaner, just like the PS2 games improved over time. Also, on one more note, look at GTA IV, I understand GTA IV had been in production for a long time, but the game came out After the release of the PS3, I think it came out at this time for 2 reasons 1, There was a big potential for PS3 owners to buy it now, but also with MGS4 coming out, they would be tapping that market as well. Also, many of us, (myself included) don't see it necessary to have to pay for online gaming, I myself think its ridiculous if you're spending, 20-50 bucks a month for an ISP, why should you have to pay another 50 bucks a year to play games online, some will disagree with me I'm sure, but it's just my opinion, (probably the reason I never got into WoW) I think Sony takes the win on this all the way around, in games, quality, content, and online play as well.

I thought that article was pointless, every argument they made for the Microsoft failing parallelled with PS3s marketing scheme as well.

I think I could have wrote that article myself and replaced any console in the headline, where is the analysis from so called analysts. Just a bunch of speculation and opinions that in reality pertain to both systems. The guy above that mentioned the red circle of death is more of a reason for writing this article than anything found there.

If you want absolute, 100% pure business talk about the video game industry and the future, try listening to a analyst conference call of a video game publisher every quarter after they report earnings to the street. It's the CEO and all the top analysts from all the firms. You'll probably hate it, but you never know.

It's on their website, under "investor relations" or something similar.
