Default First Surround Sound

Currently my only audio source comes from my two speakers in my Regza.
I desperately need surround sound.

I've never messed around with audio, so I don't know where to start.

Here are the two systems I'm currently looking at.

Most cost affective.

Is this a good start?

EDIT
I feel like an idiot. I can't recall the name of this device. The other day I had a power surge, while all my stuff was on. I now want to look into getting one of the devices that stay powered on for so long, to give you time to power down.
What is the name of these?
Any recommendations?
I knew the name a week ago.

I think your thinking of a UPC. Something that will allow you time to power off your equipment.

These look like cheap ways to go if you just want some surround sound, but as soon as you hear a real nice system of better quality seperates... you will be looking for any way possible to upgrade. Happened to me with my old Onkyo HTIB (Home Theater IN a Box). What player are you using?

but yeah... you're looking at protecting your t.v. which is fine... but a good surge supressor should handle that job.... when you get into $20K systems, you should look into a serious UPS, or whole-house UPS... but adding a cheap HTIB doesn't really warrant the expense in my opinion.

I may get a whole-house UPS in the future, but I'm having a hard time justifying the expense, since I have always used good surge suppressors, and they work well......

I'm using a PS3, and a Toshiba REGZA.

Just spend them money on an AVR, and pair of front towers...... That's my recommendation...

If you have a "Be all, end-all" budget, what would it be?

Any recommendations on a receiver?

I would like to spend less that $1,000.
