Default Can a receiver be used like this?

Is it possible to connect a bunch of sources to a receiver with no speakers, and have it pass audio along with video in a single hdmi cable to a hdtv? I want to use my old receiver from my basement like this for my bedroom hdtv where I do not need surround sound, but would like to use the existing in wall hdmi faceplate instead of just putting all the av cables in wall with one of those scooped faceplates. Something about the open hole bothers me.

It depends on the receiver. Read your manual.

Yes, just set the receiver hdmi audio output to TV/PASSTHROUGH instead of AMP.
