I think all computers have this function. There are ways to override it but it means flashing the drive and that doesn't always turn out so good......

The reason I ask is because I just bought a region 2 DVD on ebay and this is what it said in the auction......

REGION CODE 2

PAL

This is a European region 2 PAL DVD. Make sure that you are able to play region 2 DVD's and/or have a PAL to NTSC converter to view it on NTSC TVsets.

This DVD will play on any computer equipped with a
DVD-ROM drive.

Computers automatically convert PAL or NTSC. Sorry, but no refunds will be given due to system incompatibility!

So does this make any sense to anybody here?

Get AnyDVD HD from www.slysoft.com, it takes care of the hardware and software region coding without changing any actual hardware settings. I've got a couple region 2 discs and, with AnyDVD installed, they work like any other disc.

DVD region can be changed up to five times, and locked to hardware, so there is no way of reseting the count after 5 times (flashing may be possible-but that carries a risk)

BD region can be changed up to 5 times, but it can be reset by uninstalling and reinstalling the software

I recommend if you do live in the US: DO NOT change it.

Option 2 is to get another DVD drive and set it to region 2.
