Understand that one day the PS3 may get firmware upgrade so that it can upconvert DVDs to 720p/1080i.
If it does, will a Blu-Ray playing on a 1080i TV look any better than a upconverted DVD? I ask because I bought my High-Def TV prior to 1080p being the norm, so don't see myself getting an upgrade anytime soon. I've thought about getting rid of my DVD versions to upgrade to Blu-Ray, but is it worth it in the end if the picture quality is the same? |

without a doubt, a BR will look better.
i have an upconverting player and a BR and the BR titles far exceed the quality of upconversion |

Uncoverted to 1080p = Soft and a little blurry pictures, but nice n neat.
Blu-ray 1080p = Crystal clear, crispy, cristal, wet, sharpy, and well defined and more focused picture. Ha ha.......... |

Depends on the upconverting DVD player. Some do a crappy job. My KiSS DP-600 does a fantastic job upconverting to 1080i through the HDMI but the PS3 Blu-Ray titles look a bit more like a photograph. Massive difference? No but trure colors, smoother edges etc.

the firmware update will enable the use of the scaling chip in the ps3. as recently reported here and other places, the horizontal scaling (or was it vertical?) was enabled in the latest firmware release.

The PS3 can downconvert, interlace/deinterlace, and do 2:3 pulldown. I can't imagine that this kind of video processing wouldn't be able to upconvert/deinterlace as well. It would just need a firmware upgrade telling it to do so.
BTW, a little off topic, and forgive me if this has been querried upon before, but Superman Returns BD list some special features as 1080p and I've read that they are the deleted scenes. Yet for some reason, they only play back in 480p on my PS3 that is automatically set for HDMI: 480p, 720p, and 1080i. I checked the bit rate of them as well and they hover around the 5-7Mbps range - DVD quality - which leads me to suspect that they aren't really in 1080p. Even if they were hi-def it should just interlace the 1080p picture to 1080i like it does with all BD movies Last edited by LembasBread; 01-29-2007 at 09:52 PM. |
