Hello all.
I apologize if this has been covered before but I have noticed that there are several live music blus on the market. I am intrigued by these releases as some of them actually get just about as much hype as a movie bd release does. Others, however, not so much. I would really like to see more videos like this released on blu and the best way to help facilitate this is by exposure and sales. That is the point of this thread. I was wondering if there is a comprehensive thread dedicated specifically to music blus. If not then I would like to start one. ![]() Please feel free to list your favorite music related releases and even a personal review of why you did or did not like the release. These can include live shows, video collections, music documentaries, ect... Also I would like to have a "master list" of sorts that covers everything that has been released so far. You can't buy them if you are unaware that they even exist. ![]() So far I only have one music related blu. It is a documentary called About a Son. It is actually several audio clips recorded by Michael Azerrad while interviewing Kurt Cobain for his comprehensive and excellent book titled Come As You Are. I was born in 1977 and Nirvana was HUGE when I was in high school. I, of course, loved this band and grew up listening to their music. The influence they had on my life was unlike any other. I know it sounds cliche as all get out but I honestly feel that they were the voice of a disaffected and disillusioned youth. When I was a younger man and had more disposable income (read less responsibility) I spent a great deal of time trying to track down everything Nirvana that I could get my hands on. Import cds of live shows, bootlegs of rare and unreleased tracks (anyone else remember the six disc "black box"), vinyl records, pre-Nirvana and post-Nirvana recordings from the band members, compilations, ect... I was thirteen years old when Nevermind came out and still to this day I listen to that record on a very regular basis, I use Drain You as my ring tone on my cell, and still occasionally try to hunt down some cool artifacts from my youth and Nirvana's history (latest cool scores were the vinyls of Hard to believe, Muddy Banks, and The Priest They Called him. ![]() My point is, this is easily my favorite band of all time and now that I am a bit older I am finding the occasional nugget of Nirvana that I had never heard of before (the 'net really wasn't anything like it is now). One of these items (as mentioned above) was a documentary called About a Son. I was shocked that I had not even heard of this until recently so while in Best Buy one day when I happened across a copy on blu I nabbed it up without hesitation. I have a friend who has also read Come As You Are several times and is familiar with it so I told him that I would hold off on watching it until we both had time to watch it together for the first time. I must admit that I am VERY disappointed in this release. Its total crap and honestly, rather boring. ![]() ![]() This REALLY should have been released as an audio only effort. On that level it would have succeeded much more. Kurt is a funny guy who is brutally honest, and hearing his words in his own voice is effective and sometimes quite sad. He was clearly depressed and that came across clearly in his music, and his speech contained on this video. As an ardent music and Nirvana fan I must say to avoid this at all costs. There are no interviews, no pics, and NOTHING Nirvana related going on in the video portion. Instead I highly suggest reading Come As You Are a couple of times through and watching the MUCH better Seattle documentary Hype! For those of you that may be like me in their passion for all things Nirvana this still may sound tempting, especially considering the source material and as an opportunity to spend some more time with Kurt, but please be forewarned you will most likely be VERY dissapointed and wish you had spent your time listening to one of their records instead. Sorry for the extremely long post. Thanks for reading and please feel free to share your reviews for your music and music related blus. ![]() EDIT: I have a typo in the word "documentaries" for the thread title and it is seriously bugging me too. LOL!!! Last edited by painted_klown; 10-31-2009 at 12:14 AM. |
