Default I have No HDTV

Thats right, I am sans-HDTV and it SUCKS! Not only am I not getting the full Blu-ray experience, but I will be losing TV in February thanks to the switch over to digital. I know where I can find a nice 32" 1080i full HDTV for $200 used but I don't have the money. Maybe I should stop getting Blu-rays for the time being and save for that TV. What do you think?

My current TV is so old that Its not even cable ready. I have to run my PS3 through a S-Video->Coax converter box, then to a Coax->UHF box on the back of the TV.

Where should I go with this? I don't make much. I was lucky to find a PS3 for $100 with a faulty HDD (replaced with a 120gb one).

No, forget Blu Ray, it will be dead in a few months. You need D-VHS D-Theatre 1080i tapes. It's the way of the future thanks to JVC.

If this is not a joke, then I don't know what to say.

Why, in the world, would you be buying BD's if you don't have an HDTV????

Priority #1 - Buy HDTV
Priority #2 - Buy Blu-ray player (done, with your PS3)
Priority #3 - Buy AVR (not any good without priority 3a)
Priority #3a - Buy FL, C & FR speakers
Priority #3b - Buy subwoofer
Priority #3c - Buy surround speakers

You shouldn't be buying BD's until after #2

A cemetery? Let me know if you find the head stone for HD-DUD.

At first glance this seemed like a rather kooky thread, but it sort of brings up a point about the merits of buying a Blu-ray player or Blu-ray capable device like the PS3 even if you don't already own a HDTV.

Here's the deal. I no longer see any point at all in people purchasing ordinary DVD players -especially those that "upconvert" to 1080p. I see them as a waste of money.

It may only be $40 to $100, but the money spent on a upconverting DVD player is still a significant amount of money spent on technology of yesterday. That money could be used to significantly offset the cost of a new Blu-ray player.

Most Blu-ray players can be connected to ordinary 4:3 standard definition TVs. I think a lot of people don't realize that. The players can be set to output 480p in addition to their native HD modes. I'm not surprised by claims that BDs down-converted to 480p look better than DVDs of the same movie.

Still, I think anyone building up a Blu-ray library of movies without already having a HDTV is going a step too far. Renting Blu-ray movies without having a HDTV doesn't make any sense at all.

There's nothing wrong with buying the Blu-ray playback hardware as a replacement for a broken DVD player though -even if you don't already own a HDTV.

Its not like I am only buying Blu-rays. I still get DVDs too. The only blu-rays I buy are ones not on DVD (The Patriot: Extended Cut, and Blade Runner 5 disc pack).

I plan to sell some of my Laserdiscs to get money for a HDTV of decent quality.

Hi Guys,
That's what exactly I am doing here connecting my Sharp BD-HP20A to my
34" Panasonic Flatpanel CRT TV via component. The picture quality to me is about 40% better than DVDs and of course the colour and PQ out weighs the
DVDs PQ. I was taking a gamble to actually jump into blu ray without first
getting a HDTV.What launched me into blu was essentially the AQ.

Thanks to this forum I got know about how to enjoy the latest audio format
Dolby Truhd,PCM,DTS-HD Ma etc. without investing in the latest A/V amps
that provide the above audio codecs.I am still using the Onkyo TX-DS676
which is provided with the 5.1 analoque input and pre-out and that made me
took the steps and go ahead and jump in.I have never look back since.

PQ wise I am happy at the moment as the TV has a progressive scan feature
that quite measure up to the BD.At least through my eyes I could really see
the PQ difference what BD offers that is better than DVDs,the details and
the colours and the black levels are really amazing.

So what's holding me back to get a HDTV and not that I can't afford one-
'IT'S THE WIFE FACTOR' she'll nag me to kingdom come if I ever get one
but I am patient me willing !

All in all I truly made the right choice of embracing blu and enjoying it's
great AQ/PQ immensely

OP....

If you can't scrape together $200 for this t.v. you found.... you shouldn't buy ANY movies..... DVD, Blu-Ray, or otherwise......

Answer these...

1) do you smoke

2) do you have cable/satellite television

3) How often do you go out to eat.

4) How often do you go to the bar?

I'm sure we can find $200 in your budget pretty quickly!
