As for updates, I havn't notice them take up any room and I have quite alot stored on mine, perhaps some other games you play have installed onto the HDD like GTA IV. |

An 80gb will be around 76gb, but the bigger the HDD the more that will be missing, if you have a single 500gb HDD, you will most likely be missing a fair size chunk so you may only have 475gb in reality. However, the 60gb HDD in the PS3 should have around 55gb to 58gb atleast without anything installed on it. |

They shouldn't take up much room, unless you're saving 100's of games, in which case they may do so, I don't know for sure as I only really play 2 games but arn't all game saves Kilobytes in size, that's tiny and it would take a long time to fill up a fair chunk of the PS3's HDD.

My PS3 60 gig had 55 gig available out-of-box, so they've accounted for your other "missing" space with the GTAIV install. MGSIV is something like 5gb as well, and so is Oblivion. At some point in time in the near future, people are going to have to remove these files from their systems in order to have room.... Is it possible to delete an actual game's installed information like you can a save file?

Also, I dunno the actual size of the memory for the OS, but I'd bet its 512mb - 1gig because the firmware updates are often over 100mb in size. |

As for the gigs you are losing, when you get up higher.
It is because Hard Drive companies do it as 1000mb for a GB. and Microsoft/Sony do it as 1024MB for a GB. That 24mb racks up really fast the more GB's you go up, and slowly lose GB. My 125GB hard drive starting out was 112GB. You are also losing Hard Drive space, to installs, game saves, messages, or themes. |
