Default Looking to buy a receiver (warning: newb & cheap)

Hi guys

I would like some advice. I'm not much of an "home theater" person but I do want a receiver to "enhance" the sound of normal gaming and occasional movies. ATM, I am stuck to using the stock speaker that came with my Olevia 242 fhd (yes. I'm cheap) and it's actually worse than the speaker on my Hyundai 32in LCDtv (I know. I'm cheap. And Yes, they do make LCDtv).

Here's the thing. I don't need an a/v receiver, Just the audio. I found a couple of older receiver from my local Craigslist for around 50-70 bucks. Would it be wise to purchase them? I mean, some of them are 5.1 and some are just stereo receiver but that should be fine with what I am looking for. Again, I am cheap (or not really into full blasting my house). It would be my first receiver so I am pretty much just testing the water to see where I stand and what fit me. What are some good features to look for?

Some advice please. TiA. Please be nice. (oops. just realize we have a newb section. oh well.)

If you just want "surround sound" at the minimum, make sure it has an optical input.... if it does, and you can get it for $50, then I say go for it.... then pick up some cheap speakers, and you're on your way.

doesn't mean anything to me.....

Loud does not = better

You'll have a lot of pseudo eliteists tell you that you need to get HDMI 1.3 etc. etc. etc.... if you just want some surround sound.... 5.1 capable receiver with Optical input will get the job done for you.

Do you need AM/FM or DVD out of your receiver? I bought my set from Wal-Mart five or six years ago, 5.1 surround sound, came with 5 small speakers, and it only cost $70 back then. I love it. I actually think it's a better unit than my grandma's Sony STR-DE 998. The Wal-Mart off-brand name is even Durasound (who has even heard of that name before?) This one has digital fiber optic out, and digital coax, plus a 5 different outs (TV, Game, Digi Opt, Auxiliary, and Digi Coax) and I get awesome surround out of it.

Good luck finding something you like!

I have used one of these, and for the money it is really a great deal.

I know it isn't 50-70 dollars, but 130 dollars for 5.1 isn't bad at all.

thanks guys...especially the link so that I atleast now know of some good budget receivers....thankx.....

I will probably buy one that will work well with the ps3 since I will be watching movies mainly from it...will probably buy a sound card to put on my HTPC as well once the receiver is bought.

thanx

hey...Just letting y'all know that I settle for a Yamaha HTR-5740. A local guy wants $75 and I took it...something to play with, I guess...dosen't have much in the video out section but I think it's enough for me to get my ps3 running on some nice speakers....
