Default Blu-ray or Upconverting Player

I have read a few threads here, and seems like a lot of complaints about their blu-ray players....i have look at a few upconverting players, i have a sony 40 inch lcd.....is an unconverting player a good my now, and wait for the next blu-ray versions....if i got it right, upconverting will make regular dvd,s look 6 times better.....i want blu-ray or upconverting for wathcing dvd movies.

Upconverted DVDs still look like mush compared to true Blu-ray.

Yeah, of course DVD will look like azz compared to high def BD, but I think he's asking about the upconversion quality of these players, which I have had a difficult time with too...

The Panasonics all suck when it comes to upscaling (the Blu ray Panasonics) and that's why I am going to invest in an Oppo 983H for standard DVD upscaling; this should be better than the Panny '10A's upconversion, shouldn't it?

I guess what I am saying is you can only do so much with DVD upconversion. Trying to split hairs on what DVD upconverter is better is like putting premium gas in your tank rather then regular. The only difference is in your head.

If your TV has a poor quality scaler, an upconverting player will make a substantial improvement. But not 6x better. Not even twice as good.

I would suggest you wait till latter in the year for the new generation Blu-Ray players and for prices to go down.

prices are dropping so yes there will be cheaper players (where, when and how much, I don't know) On the other hand, I am not sure if it is still on but Wal-mart used to have a 100$ store credit if you buy a BD player.

hey, i got one question for you...do you play video games at all? if you do, go ahead and pick up the ps3, because its the best BD player on the market, plays the awesome ps3 games (including GTA4 and MGS4, which both got perfect 10 ratings ) and it also does a great job of upconverting your old DVD's

This is absolutely untrue...there are huge differences between DVD upconverters, evidenced by the shitty job my Panny '10A does...

Default personal use

My Oppo with Dcdi up scaling works better than the Sony 300. for up converting standard dvd.
I am still trying out several set ups because my Sony receiver uses the same scaler. I was trying to "turn off" the scaler in the Bdps300 but cannot seem to see how to do it. In other words let the out put play at whatever the native resolution of the disk is and let my receiver do the up scaling.
On the Oppo I can turn it on and off and notice no diff. in the picture quality when the receiver is doing the scaling as compared to the internal chip.

Ive been reading a lot about Oppo's upcoverting.Right now iam using the bd-p1400 for bd and dvd.I have over 250 dvd's.Will i see a big difference in up-coverting my movies from the 1400 to Oppo 983h?(I always thought the 1400 did a good job?But i could be wrong.)

I could not be happier with the Oppo line.
When I made my purchase the 981 was their top of the line and after reading the reviews I decided to buy.
From what I see on their web site the Dcdi scaler has been replaced with a ABIT scaler (which is software based) The ABIT scaler is used by Yamaha in its 1800 and 3800 receivers and while it works well I still prefer the Faroudja
scaler.
Should you spend almost twice as much for the new model???
That is a question you need to answer, Should you get an Oppo for standard DVD playback YES!!!!!! YES!!!!! YES!!!!!!!

As to the picture when up scaled..... the better the original master the better the upscaler will work.
I will tell you that some disks look no better than the standard DVD and others are stunning.
One of the best is the 2005 Remaster of Titanic... While the original release looks marginally better when I play it back the Remaster looks close to Blu in quality.

Its a win , win... they have a great return policy. A friend of mine did buy 1 and was not as impressed as I hoped he would be. One phone call and a return prepaid label was sent to him.
I think if you try one you will love it but buy knowing its an easy return if you do not feel its a big enough improvement.

On a side note I use mine as an SACD and I have had some of my customers order them because they (the 981 at least) can be made region free.

I noticed that you have bdps300.Iam just wondering what came first the oppo or the 300 and iam assuming you never use your 300 for standard dvd's right?Would you say its like night and day between oppo and the 300 for dvd.Iam sorry that iam asking a lot of question but iam really interested on getting a kick ass up-converting player.(at least something better than my 1400)and iam not complaining about the 1400"but not seeing better is not knowing".You know what i mean?

Cool Cannot Increse the Resolution

Even the BEST DVD Upconverter CANNOT increase the resolution of a standard DVD. A regular DVD has only 480 lines of pixtels (picture elements). When they Up-Convert, they "fill-in" the lines to simulate 1080i, but the resolution is the same.

Now, the resolution of a Blu-ray is over 2 million pixels! It is EXACTLY six times the resolution of a standard DVD (a little over 2 million actually).

So, while your HDTV and fancy Up-Converter can simulate Hi-Def, why settle for 2nd best? Get a decent Blu-ray and watch TRUE Hi-Def.

My Samsung 1200 may have had firmware issues in the past, but it has one of the best up-converter chips around (HQV). I don't buy standard DVDs anymore, but every once in a while I still watch an old Bond flick or the Matrix in regular DVD. It looks great, but I still can't wait to see the Matrix in Blu-ray.

The Oppo came first... been doing dvd for a long time and yes it works better than the 300 for up conversion... The poster is correct the resolution is sitll 480 but how well the scaler fills in the extra lines is the diff between the players in question.
As far as the price perhaps you should consider the 981 as a good option..
as far as wives..... well mine wants a bigger TV Im so lucky..
