I don't have an answer, but I figured as long as you were bringing up the subject, I'd add my question: I have a PS3 going out to receiver via optical cable for audio (HDMI for video). Should I have it set to Bitstream? I was confused with the multiple answers on the previous thread.

Yes, it should be set to Bitstream

TOSLINK can support lossy 7.1, but there are no 7.1 sources.
As there are no 7.1 sources, the PS3 will never have anything 7.1 to send through TOSLINK.

TOSLINK's specs limit PCM to 2 channels, so to get 7.1 PCM (Innocence) you'll need to use the HDMI.

I used hdmi as video direct to the TV and optic fiber (toslink) as audio connected to my AV. Watching movies, playing games do come out as surround 5.1 (i have 5.1 set-up), but when i popped in a SACD disc...the system tells me that i have to change my audio connection settings, it would not play SACD using toslink...therefore, i am a bit confused also...any info on this matter would greatly appreciated...thanks.

You need to use analog out cables, HDMI v1.2 or iLink for SACD, which uses 1 bit audio.

SACD will not work with optical.

DobyBlue, thanks for the clearing up, i just wanted to understand why. But I am just gonna skip the SACD playback on the PS3 all together..because i do have a SACD setup in my other room.

The PS3 does not have iLink (FireWire, IEEE 1394) output.
My AV does not support hdmi.
And I certainly dont want to switch back and forth between analog and optical every time i wanted to listen to SACD on the PS3.

If and when you upgrade to a HDMI receiver with 1080p pass through and 7.1 audio in (with audio processing), using HDMI with the PS3 is the way to go since the signal remains in digital when it's being passed.

By the way, I noticed recently that the Pioneer 696 universal player doesn't output 5.1 SACD via analog or HDMI. Is that correct? It only outputs DVD-A correctly.

Any of the DV models support SACD and DVD-A through analog and iLink.

Sunday - in a couple years just upgrade your receiver when the $'s go down. Until then enjoy your other SACD set-up. I still use my DV-45a for mine.
