Default PS3 BC works better when choosing 480p option in games

The 1080p upscaling of ps2 games seems to be worse on my setup than actually selecting the 480p option within the game. My TV does the rest, upscaling the 480p to the native resolution of my TV. The graphical detail is like 2x better than the 1080p upscale I get from the PS3.

Anyone else notice this. I tried Shadow of the Colossus.

if you think the ps2 games look bad in 1080 just look at the PS1 games

I found out the games actually look better running on an actual PS2(via component cables) in 480i, than any upscaled res on the PS3.

Me too!

If they ever release a firmware update which includes a PS2 emulator for 40gb PS3's then I'll test this out.

A death note fan I see

The PS3 (as I have found out) upscales 480i. Selecting 480p doubles the resolution natively, so you should (as I did) get a much better pic from actually choosing 480p.

Yes, I see it too. So much for all the hype on 1080p upscale always providing better PQ. I also notice lower PQ with 720p games up-scaled to 1080p. 720p games look best on a 720p set because of a closer 1:1 pixel mapping. Too bad there is not a 960p (480x2) window box setting to get the most out of 480p PS2 games and DVD on a 1080p TV.

Not likely to happen though, as many are confused by black bars on the top and bottom on their screen when a movie is presented in it's OAR. Bars on all four sides would be a killer for some.

Shadow Of The Colossus is probably the most hardware intensive PS2 game ever.

I am playing GOW2 at the moment using the special high resolution trick and it looks so colorful and vibrant. Its like at least 3x better than just 1080p.

Its L1/2 and 3 pressed down, with circle and square when its booting up. If the writing is purple you done it correctly. Make sure to select 480p in the options as well. To be honest, its quite remarkable what the PS2 is doing bar some ripping.

Just google high resolution god of war 2.

It was a last minute addition to GOW2 and works on PS3 and PS2. It does make colours a bit more vibrant.
