Default Upscaling/Downscaling questions ..help greatly appreciated

Ok, so I have a 32 inch 720p resolution TV. 720p is the max resolution for this television.

I have a Blu-Ray player and I know Blu-Ray players are meant to play 1080p resolution. My question is, if I put a DVD in my Blu-Ray player, will the player upscale the quality of the DVD? And if so, to what quality? I'm worried because if my blu-ray player upscales the DVD quality to 1080p, my 720p television isn't going to support that..so wouldn't I get an inaccurate picture?

Should I just get my player to display a 720p resolution all the way around?

Same goes for Blu-Ray discs. I know Blu-Ray discs play at 1080p resolution, so if the player is going to down-convert the 1080p disc to 720p for my television, will this mess up the original quality of the blu ray disc? Is it okay to down convert the 1080p quality of blu-ray discs?

Its also weird when I select the resolution output on my blu-ray disc player to AUTO, because the player assumes it should output 1080p to my TV? Well, my TV is only 720p. So confused.

Answers greatly appreciated! Thank you.

not sure about the answer to your question but my solution would be to find a cheap used 1080P tv on craigslist or something.

BD's are 1080P natively, using a 1080P or better display is what you should be using without further thought. There is no signal improvement from a BD player, you are reducing the quality of what you are watching by using a 720P TV. Your comparing 1280×720 (.9 megapixels) to 1920x1080 (2.1 megapixels). With a 480i DVD yes there is improvement with picture quality usually by interpolation algorithm using a BD player.

I have a 720 plasma (42") and all blu-rays look fine. As do upscaled DVDs (as upscaled DVDs go). If the output of your player is 1080 (as mine is), it will not effect the display (though the display will only be 720). No distortion or anything. Stop worrying and enjoy. Plus, I do not think that such "downscaling" exist. The blu-ray will output at 1080 and the TV will display at 720.

most blu-ray players will output at 720p if that's what the resolution for your tv is.

HDMI is a 2-way street, and your player "knows" that it's attached to a 720p display.

I have a Pioneer Kuro 5080 (720p) and an Oppo 103D. Not only do blu rays look spectacular, but NO ONE has ever questioned the resolution. No worries, sit back and enjoy the show!

So, what should I do when I'm playing a Blu-Ray disc? Keep the Blu-Ray player at 1080p and let my 720p television "down convert" the 1080p quality being sent from the player to the television. Or, should I select the player to output a 720p resolution so that my 720p television doesn't have to do as much "down converting?"

I've tried setting my Blu-Ray player to AUTO output in order for it to recognize my 720p television, but the player still says its displaying 1080p to my 720p television when I hit the info button on my remote.

Also, is downscaling a thing?

Thanks guys.

Just leave it on auto. The TV has a built in scaler designed to scale any input to your panel with the best looking picture. Let it do it's job. Most 720p tvs aren't actually 720p but 1366x768. You should send the 1080p signal to the TV so the TV internally downscales to the panel resolution. If you sent a 720p signal, it would have to then upscale to the panel resolution resulting in a loss of quality.
