That is a pretty good list, but The Matrix shouldn't be on there even if you're counting Animatrix since only Animatrix is Anime and that was released in 2003.

I believe in the documentary Kingdom of Dreams and Madness Miyazaki himself expresses a desire to distance Ghibli from the term "anime." I believe he says he dislikes the word because most anime, in his opinion, "glorifies pain." I'm going on memory, so I hope I'm not misquoting him. I myself am not sure whether that is a totally fair assessment on his part.
Question: I feel like the older anime is usually more satisfying to me, but how many of the more obscure titles on the above list are actually worth watching? Space Adventure Cobra? Venus Wars? Jungle Emperor Leo? Golgo 13: The Professional?
There is a ton of great anime, but probably twice as much garbage.
Also: What the deal with Ranma 1/2? Is that a show for adults to enjoy or for kids?
As for the list above, I'm pretty sure Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting haven't Benin announced, let alone released. On DVD yes, but on blu. Maybe Discotek has plans, but I'm not aware of release dates.

Venus Wars in my top 5 animes ever. And probably responsible for both my interests and my tastes in anime. Thanks Sci-Fi Channel!

That's some BS. Animation from Japan = anime. The Japanese call all animation anime, but for anyone else, the term anime means "animation from Japan." It makes so much sense to label things this way that all arguments against it simply do not count.
Western animation inspired by anime is NOT anime. RWBY is not anime.
I'm just a grown man who enjoys cartoons. I don't give a damn about the different labels people want to put on them but it's funny to me that he doesn't want his stuff to be labeled as anime as if there was something wrong with that.

To be fair, its not that there was necessarily less. Its that less of it got to English speaking regions. Fewer outlets.
