The remakes and spinoffs are like printing money, but at the same time the main series both makes more and is what makes those remakes and spinoffs earn money.
Final Fantasy XII outsold all of the DS/Gameboy advance remakes combined, and the Final Fantasy XII and Crisis Core spinoffs barely cracked one million units. I know the main Final Fantasy series are more costly to make but even so the main series is the bread winner. |

FF9 came out for PS1 around the time the PS2 came out IIRC. That would also explain some of the gap until 10.
