Question Wireless Routers for PS3

I have Playstation 3 80GB, it says you should hook it up to your computer to get updates from Sony. I called Sony and they would not tell what kind of router to get.
I also have the DISH Network, and they have an online service you can hook you tv upto the computer and get on-line stuff. Again with a wireless router.

Please give me a primer on what all you can do with a wireless router,
and which kind, brand, type might work for both the PS3 and the DISH.
I see prices from $29.99 to $199.99. What are you getting as price goes up?

I know it isn't ideal but if it is possible I would use a wired connection. Much more stable than a wireless connection and ofcourse faster. A wired connection would also be much easier to setup. That is just my suggestion.

Wired would be ideal but its horrible to get a cable to your PS3 unless your modem is right next to it. I use a Linksys wirless g router. Not the best router but ive never had any problems while actually playing online.

I agree and disagree... as far as the ps3... I used wireless and online was very unstable and frustrating.. wired is no sweat... just no hassle, but when you get a router, get wireless... That way, if someone brings over a laptop, they can use your internet without the hassle of a wire streaming in from another room or something.

Again, a wireless router has jacks in the back for wired hookup as well. I hear that N routers get the best signal, but they run about $70 bucks. That's your best bet... check it out. I think there was an article in yahoo in maximizing your wireless signal...

I didn't mean for him not to get a wireless router just to try and use a wired connection to the PS3 if possible. Nothing wrong with getting a wireless router.

i knew what you meant. I didn't mean to come off against what you said. I was in agreement with you. I think wired is the best way to go.

I use a linksys wrt54g 802.11 b router. it runs my ps3 x-box notebook I never get lag online. Downloads are fast. It all depends on your service provider and your package. I have comcast's standard broadband package.
Edit: Oh yes I forgot my wife has a psp and a ds my kids have a wii they all work with the linksys router i have. So there you have it any and all devices that can run off of a router i have and they all work with ZERO compatability issue. And they are fast and downloads are fast. So you have your information only thing left for you to do is make a choice. Sony and micro$oft and nintendo as well will do NOTHING to help you connect with a router.

The PS3 will generally work with any wireless router. However, the Wii and DS have compatibility issues with some routers, so if you own either of those, you should check their compatibility lists and buy something from that.

i use the d-link dgl-4500 wireless gaming router. it's n,draft 2.0,g and b. All other n routers just say draft so sience it's gaming centric and draft 2.0 i'd stick with the dgl-4500

I use a wireless router for my PS3 and Wii and have no problems at all. Think mine is a Linksys(spelling) router.

I have ATT Uverse, and the wireless gateway that comes with the service is awesome for the PS3. We have 2 PS3's, the laptop and the Wii hooked up too it and have never had a problem in a 2 story 4000 sq. ft. home with the desktop hooked up too it directly. I guess it depends on your router. but for those who state wireless is unstable I disagree

i use an airport extreme n router, i had a linksys wireless g router but when i use the ps3 it would boot my computers off the network. I have not had any problems with the airport extreme and i have it configured to allow remote play to work.

Linksys WRT54 b\g is the best in my opinion! I have had it for ages and it just works great no issues and also you can pick the up very cheap! They also do good distance.

I have one PS3 wired into the WRT54g and one PS3 connected wireless.

Wired one is of course the fastest, but for reliability both connections are very good.

I bought a cheap Trendnet wireless router only to be able to download stuff for the Wii. Got it for 24$ which was cheaper than the Wii Wireless Network USB Key that doesn't work half the time. Turns out it was worth it cause I use it now for my PS3.

It isn't the best but it gets the job done as I only need it for that function. Once I'm done with my downloads I just switch to my regular wired DLINK router.

I recently changed my router from a Wireless G Netgear router to the Linksys WRT600N Dual-band Wireless N router and I do NOT suggest this router for gaming. First off the N signal is weaker than the G signal from the Netgear. Secondly, I can't play online games. For one, I can't get off of NAT Type 3 no matter what I try. Port forwarding, UPnP or DMZ. None of it works. Secondly hooking up two PS3's on my network trying to set up a LAN game doesn't work... the connection just times out when you try to join the server.

So, I suggest staying away from the over-priced WRT600N router from Linksys. The rest of their products are usually pretty good.

The PS3 does not transmit or receive "N". A "N" router also bradcast in "G" which is what you will be working with. It is not a bad idea to go ahead and get a "N" router because N has a wider bradcast range. You may get equiptment in the future that can use it. I have the Linksys WRT54GS. It works fine. Do a google search on (PS3 NAT Type 2) to find the best way to set up the Linksys if you decide to get that brand.

Any modern wireless router will work fine with a PS3. The reason some people have issues is they simply do not know how to correctly setup encryption / security on the router.
I have an older D-Link DI-624 and it works fine. I generally like D-Link routers more than other brands because they are low maintenance units: in my experience Linksys routers often require re-boots, D-Link however has never required that. Avoid cheap D-Link wireless routers, they have lower end hardware and are not as stable as let's say DIR-655 or the newer "gaming" router from D-Link. I have quite a few friends with these routers and have heardnothing bu praise from them.

wireless routers are cheap now

I just bought a Belkin wireless-N for $49.99 from CC last month!

It works perfectly with my PS3.. so.. no problem here.

(I do have wireless N desktop, hence the wireless N router) wireless-g would be sufficient in 90% of the homes today.
