Default People's irrational fear of the PS3

Some are not open to the PS3 because they say it plays games and want a "stand alone." What diffference does it make? If you don't want to play games, just don't and it functions just the same as a stand alone (except with better MP3 and other media playing capabilities).

Also I have news for all those folks. Guess what? Your stand alone plays games too! First there are both DVD and BD titles that include minigames as a special feature. .... some may say, "O well that's different; those are just minigames." Well, I have some more bad news for you! Guess what? Your stand alone plays whole-disc games too! There are DVD and BD titles that are interactive movies (like Choose your own adventure books or Fighting Fantasy books or even some computer games) ... some may be stubborn and say, "Those are different too; those are not real games like you would see in an arcade for example." O oh, triple whammy! Guess what? Your stand alone plays ARCADE whole disc games too! Such as .... Dragon's Lair which is a game that is in arcades or at least was and was quite popular. It was also on various computer systems (including "game" systems like the Amiga).

Maybe Sony needs to include a Blu-ray edition of the PS3 (or PS4) to attract more buyers

Its simple people above a certin age and income bracket do not by game consoles to them they are a Toy for kids and not a BD player. The PS3 is a game console that also plays BD otherwise why are there games for it. If there were no games it would be a Standalone player

I own one and love it. My only hang up though is it won't bitstream lossless audio.

The PS3 fanboys (especially the "X-box must die!" ones) didn't exactly do mainstream wonders for their product's image either, back during the early-acceptance days...
We had one fanboy who nagged the Usenet game and DVD groups mercilessly in his "d00d! " pro-PS3 enthusiasm, to the point that saying almost literally any good thing about Blu-ray on alt.video.dvd would get you pelted with rocks, bricks, and pro-HD sentiments just to piss you off.

We've now reached the mainstream plateau where Blu can be accepted as video, but PS3's still got an uphill battle to clear its "gamer-boiz" name.

Did you even read my post? there are GAMES for STAND-ALONE players too! Including one that is an ARCADE game (Dragon's Lair). Check this link out:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=434

now I guess you'll have to not buy a stand-alone either! O no!

And by your reasoning I guess computers are "game consoles" since there are games for computers too!

You want to avoid bitstreaming lossless anyway cuz bitstreaming (with any player and any receiver) is incompatible with certain bells and whistles and special features like PiP audio.

PS3ers need to stop concerning themselves with the reasons why others don't want one. Why in the world would you care about someone buying a standalone over a PS3? Are you being paid endorsements for your constant badgering and ignorant bantering back and forth?

The poster above said it well, PS3 fanboys didn't do the image well at all. And I'll guarantee you this, it has less to do with that and more to do with some people just want a freaking standalone player that doesn't look more like a Bose head unit with a big curve on it. Maybe, just maybe, it's that and nothing to do with anything else. The more you push, the more resistance you get. Quit trying to sell someone that has a different opinion on "how" they perceive a BDP should look on their rack in their house.

People can disagree with you and that is called a "RIGHT". You should be able to respectfully abstain, shut your freaking piehole and accept the difference in opinion like an adult. Stop trying to sell someone on the reasons you think they should have it and simply share the benefits and respect their decision in the end. Isn't that how you would like to be treated?

It's simply amazing how the anonymity of the internet will compel people to argue things that they would never do in person. When you do it in person, face to face, you'll be held accountable for your words, the inflection of those words and your presentation overall. Yeah, it's a little different when you have to argue points in person. I would recommend we all argue as if we were in front of one another because that will force you to be humble and respect each other's differences.

True, I don't have any interest in a gaming console. I do play games, just not console games. However that is my reason for not prefering the PS3.

My real reason for buying a 'console' style BD player rather than a PS3 is the same reason I don't own any of those 'mini' DVD players. I want a full 19" rack size unit that stacks nicely in my entertainment cabinet. The PS3 just doesn't cut it for me in that regard.

It's really a matter of choice what one buys and I personally choose not to clutter my cabinet up with a gaming console. It is aesthetically unpleasant.

love the ps3 and always recommend it as the best blu-ray player to buy. I have the original 60gb. but I also run a standalone(Funia) I had to breakdown and do the bitstreaming folks. The Tru-HD sounds better. My personal opinion fellow blu-ray trolls. anyways only con i would say is that my 60gb's fan is a little noisy. not horrible but not silent as a standalone.

It doesn't matter sonically.. so don't let yourself get hung up on that.

The only functional deficiency of the PS3 vs a standalone is the lack of analog outs .. for those that don't have an HDMI receiver and therefore don't get lossless audio at all.

I am 100% sure that if Sony put out a Blu-ray theamed PS3 that was stackable (like every god damn other part of a home system that is NOT game's) it would be selling at least 20% better.

Sony cant market a PS3 as a BD player very well unless it can be stacked with other parts of the home system. That is why PS3 is a game system first.

In my opinion, if Sony did that, PS3 would be dominating the BD market. BUT If they did that, PS3 would be losing even more money. SO maybe they dont do it for a reason.

I think you mean obliterate .. it already dominates .. the movie sales ratio during the "war" was only explainable by the PS3 factor... given the standalone ratios.

Their own standalones. People forget each division also competes against each other to a certain degree and have different audiences etc.

I thought it provided the bitstreaming capabitilty. I know there's alot of people who don't care between LPCM and Bitstream but I personally wanted my elite 94thx to do the work and I believe the Tru-hd tracks sound more distinct. which before when I ran them PCM I had to turn them up. Just my opinion.

I used to have the PS3 strictly for movies and really liked it. However, I got rid of it for the Panasonic BD30 because I found its 1080p/24 PQ slightly better and wanted bitstreaming audio. However, the PS3 was virtually bug free unlike my BD30.

Also, cosmetically the BD30 looks nicer, but that certainly wasn't a deal breaker for me.

I have a stand alone panasonic in my living room, and a PS3 in my bedroom.
It works out quite nicely.
As I have a nicer TV in my bedroom at the moment, I still watch most of my movies in there.
(And to avoid the roommate)

There is great post somewhere on why bitstreaming doesn't matter for lossless over HDMI - which is the only way the PS3 could do it. If the PS3 had analog outs .. that would be potentially different as you would be introducing DAC's on the PS3 at that point .. and they would likely be inferior to a good receiver.
