Default All musicians out there, Have you seen August Rush?

All musicians out there, Have you seen August Rush?
Wow, what a great movie!

When my wife wanted to rent it, I was against it at first, because it looked like a sappy romance, but it ended up being one heart warming movie.
I remember watching Amadeus and feeling the same way.
I watched August Rush on DVD, and see that it's available on Blu-ray. Is it worth the buy?

What other music movies do you guys enjoy?

How was August Rush not sappy? Robin Williams' character was just thrown in for good measure (pun). His character killed that movie for me.

I have to kind of agree. The movie was ok, my wife loved it, but I def thought it was way on the sappy side. It did look pretty amazing on BLU though. If your really into it I reccommend the blu purchase.

you want to see something truly inspiring, yet depressing at the same time go check out the documentary 'heavy metal in baghdad' I just watched this on DVD the other night and felt it was pretty gripping and thought provoking.
Make sure you watch the follow up 'heavy metal in istanbul' thats included in the 'special features' section of the same dvd.

I don't know how they could make it any more sappy. I only got half way thru it and I can't bear to see any more. Nothing here for musicians or music lovers.

The movie definitely has its flaws.

***SPOILERS***

1. After a one night stand these people stay depressed for 10 years straight?!
2. Making the "if I play music, I feel they'll hear" line become almost literal was a bit silly. Sure it's a hyper-romanticized film, but by making it literal they went a little too far.
3. Robin Williams over-acted.
4. What was Terrance Howard's role in the movie again? That dude had nothing to do in this movie - I kept waiting for his character to have something to do.
5. The guitar playing in the movie was kinda cool on a good sound system.
6. Lyla's Cello performance was BORING!!!
7. The orchestrated finale was a major let down.

Some fun music here and there, but ultimately, the movie was a let down for me.

I really enjoyed this movie. I bought the Blu-Ray as soon as it came out.

Geez guys, I can tell that this movie is more of a fantasy type. There's no way music can speak to your long lost mother and father if you play it. In the end, it is all about how small our world can be, as big as it is.

This movie was just OK for me. My wife loved this movie. But it did look really good on Blu. I'm more into the action movies!

It's definitely strains credibility and yes, Robin Williams once again got on my nerves in the movie, however I did enjoy the music and the theme that music can tie people together-- even when they are apart!

Though I won't say the video quality is anything to praise, I did very much like the audio mix on the BD, and count it as one of the better lossless mixes i've heard.

My fiancee loves this movie to death, so I let her pick it out to watch together. I find myself not wanting to see these sappy movies but when I watch them they're not that bad. I guess not like Epic Movie bad or anything. I was kind of hoping that it was somewhat based on a true story because there's no way a kid could play guitar like that just picking it up, and for someone to write a story with that seemed a little absurd. Heck, I've been playing for over 7 years and I couldn't do some of the stuff he was doing. Oh well. If I had to choose watching this again or having her make me watch 'The Notebook' or 'A Walk To Remember' I would choose this in a heartbeat, at least Terrence Howard is in it.

The film was supposed to be like a fantasy romance. So the romance stuff didn't bother me except for Jonathan Rhys Meyers' role. Keri Russell had kind of a rough life and seemed to have a reason to be upset. JRM just kind chopped people's heads off for no reason and acted upset when there didn't seem to be much reason.

The other thing that bugged me was the whole Robin Williams & The Lost Boys stuff. The Lost Boys stuff was sooo cheesy and seemed beyond unrealistic and pointless. I blame the music partially for that.

But none of that really made me dislike the movie. To me there was more possitive than negative. Throughout the entire movie you hear portions of what all comes together to become August's Rhapsody. Why Mark Mancina's score never got released for this film I'll never know. And I feel score fans were all robbed because of it. But his finale for this film was fantastic and very well done.

I'm a drummer who plays some guitar. I'm more like Paul Stanley, not Eddie Van Halen if you dig what I'm screamin'.

I've put off watching this until it hits a premium channel on DIRECTV. I too have been afraid it is too sappy. I think I'll wait and watch it on HBO HD.
