Sony Computer Entertainment America issued a press release today announcing that since the release of the PlayStation 3, with more than two million units shipped worldwide, Blu-ray Disc has experienced "tremendous growth in consumer adoption."

Using data provided by consumer research firm Nielsen VideoScan, Sony found out that:

* Blu-ray has surpassed HD-DVD in cumulative sales.
* Blu-ray titles outsold HD-DVD titles by more than a two-to-one margin during the first week of January (47.14 HD DVD titles for every 100 Blu-ray titles)
* Blu-ray titles outsold HD-DVD titles closer to three-to-one during the second week of the month (38.36 HD-DVD titles for every 100 Blu-ray titles)

We expect to hear back from Toshiba soon but, in the meantime, it looks like Sony finally got one right.
Xbox Connections

figured Id qoute it. Some of the pages I try and go to that are linked end up being blocked my work.

No damage. Most people would expect any first party company to put themselves over in a big way.

Certainly Sony coming out declaring themselves the winner, in essence, would not be stretching anyone's imagination.

If that is spin...what's the "correct" way this should have been presented?

Meh. Not worth the time or effort.

I still can't get over an Xbox website posting something like this...complete with begrudging compliment no less. "Sony got one right."

That alone is good enough for me, spin title or not.

Home Theater Magazine pops out a 94/100 glowing review for the PS3 in their latest March 2007 issue as well. Nonstop good news for BD all over the place.

Hello,

I just found this at our beloved AVS Forum.... What do you think about it...?

BD+HD DVD don't even have a 1% share of the DVD market. The numbers of titles being sold is so small, that if half a dozen of you decided to buy one format or the other, it would skew the numbers that way (OK, I am exaggerating some but you get the idea ).

You might think I am dismissing these numbers because BD claims they are ahead using them. But I never bragged about them even when they admit that for the entire last year save the last week of it, HD DVD was ahead. It is just silly to hang your hat on small numbers which can have high variability. You also don’t walk looking at your feet. You have to look at where you want to go and in the process, ignoring hills and valleys along the way. As otherwise, BD should have given up last year, given the same logic!

IMHO, both camps need to focus more on winning average customers, than taking pride in taking some tiny share away from the other. I feel that we are doing the most to do this with much lower cost players, and widest array of content from around the globe. And a format that is easy to replicate, enabling us to reach the 14,000 or so DVD titles that are out there in addition to being economical to produce in full capacity and backward compatible versions. And possibly one that shares the same name as DVD .

So if the BD group is still counting on us closing shop due to these claims, my reply to them is that we have heard this story many times before. It didn’t concern us then. It certainly doesn’t concern us now, on the heels of BD exclusive companies such as LG supporting both formats. We will be around, as they will be. But if they want to underestimate us, as they did at launch last year, no one will be happier than me . It served us well then, it will serve us well in the future….

I wonder if Amir or Big Bill himself are sending a nasty memo to "Team Xbox" for posting this story in the first place and the begrudging compliment to Sony, no less.

Regardless of spin titles or what not, facts are pesky things and hard numbers speak for themselves.

Whaaa?! An Xbox fanboy site praising Sony and accepting this press release?!

Someone check the temperature in Hades and phone NORAD for a report on flying swine. I can report my butt is sore, and I am surrounded by monkeys.

The great thing about Amir's post is that he puts down HD-DVD in the process. Now all around numbers are small. First HD-DVD is outselling Blu-ray by 5:1 or whatever the ratio of the day is. When Blu-ray surges ahead, the numbers become insufficient not to matter. If HD-DVD's launch was so successful, what have the been doing lately? The more heated the rhetoric from Amir, the more scared they are.

And the more the veil gets lifted: It's obvious reading Amir's posts like those that indeed MS really doesn't care about HD-DVD. It's nothing but a sham and smokescreen job to keep the market deliberately split up.

BTW, where did "Team Xbox" get this information from anyways?

And missing Disney, Fox, Sony, MGM, and Lionsgate titles? How about that for attracting average customers? All of the sudden it becomes indie releases, porn, and Universal as the only important title sources.

Millions of PS/3 owners ARE average movie watchers. They aren't early adopter A/V nuts like many of us. That is the point of the differences in attach rates. The A/V nuts will buy a lot more discs. But, the sheer volume of PS/3 units out there swamps the piddly HD DVD numbers.

And a LOT of the A/V early adopters are actually getting the PS/3 because of the value and the performance.

And Amir should read AVSF and all the posts from HD DVD early adopters now with a PS/3. The hearts and minds are now lost. HD DVD can never win. It can merely hang on indefinitely as an oddity.

What a hypocrite Amir is for saying this, because that's all MS is doing with this HD-DVD smokescreen. Trying to keep BD from winning outright and finishing things off, which they would today if MS even said: "Hey you know what? Screw this. We're neutral. Bye-bye."

That alone would finish it faster than even Universal making a move.
