And Persepolis shoulda have won last year but didn't. It's hard for a nonmainstream animation to win.

Too much momentum for Wall*E with the critics right now, winning Best Picture from two groups and making multiple best of lists. Wall*E is a lock.

Waltz With Bashir is a bold work, certainly, but it will have to fight for the remaining two nomination slots with Bolt, the much-respected Horton Hears a Who, and Kung Fu Panda. We'll see what happens.

Have you seen Waltz w Bashir? I haven't, so as much as I liked Wall-E, I can't say one way or another which was better.

Persepolis was overrated, IMHO.

The Academy always nominated a shoe-in and a long shot for animation. The long shot is just to give the film some good publicity.

Even though one might argue that the best picture category is heavily stacked this year...I still have a feeling that Wall-E will actually nab a best picture nomination instead of animated feature. Especially if the film keeps winning like it has (winning best picture in Chicago and L.A.). Granted I don't think it would win best picture...but that leads to the argument...would it be a bigger honor to win best animated feature or to just be nominated for best picture?

Is it just me or does that guy on the cover look like a young Edward Norton?

I thought the same thing. I just read about this film and added it to my NETFLIX queue. It sounds very good.

And with so many other dreary contenders, "Wall-E for Best Picture" isn't starting to sound as silly as West-coast Disney Beast-rushes have been in previous years ("Can we nominate Ratatouille for Best Actor, even if it's a voice? ")

Yes, like the toddler testing mommy's limits, the West-coast voters are deliberately pushing the "Can we still nominate an animated for BP, even with the Best Animated category?" question this year to see what they can get away with...
But if the alternative is a Doubt/Slumdog/Benjamin Button contest for Best Picture, even I'll take the Cute-bot just for a welcome breath of fresh air.

The only way Wall-E might not win Best Animated Feature is if they give it Best Picture. And unfortunately, I don't see that happening. Wall-E is a lock for Best Animated.

I concur.
Anyway, Waltzing with Bashir with its implied anti-Israeli aspect won't get a lot of establishment support.

Pixar is so good that they need a break from winning prices

Waltz with Bashir is an adult animation, I'm not sure that it can be compared to Pixar stuff.

You are 100% correct. Wall*E is a given for Best Animated, and deservingly so.
