I am looking to upgrade my sound system. Currently I have a PS3 hooked to an older 5.1 system with no HDMI input. Money is definitely a factor now, so I can't go with a more expensive system right now. My questions are as follows....
1. What else do I have to buy to go with this? I am fairly certain I am going to have to buy a powered sub. (I don't have one now). Can I keep my other speakers though? Maybe just add 2 more to take advantage of 7.1? 2. Does this system do anything with the video, or is it just a pass-through? The reason I ask this is because my HDTV is only 1080i, and will not support any 720P signal. Also, my HDTV is DVI, so I would be using a HDMI - DVI cable from the receiver to the TV. I heard a rumor that this will not work with this system. Is this correct? 3. Looking at an image of the back panel of a 720, I see 2 outputs for FRONT A, and 2 outputs for FRONT B. What is this for? Any other suggestions for receivers in the same price range will be gladly appreciated. (Especially if this one will not work with my HDTV) Thanks Tim Last edited by tim1970; 07-17-2008 at 01:24 PM. |

ok, answers, this receiver is Ok and good for its money, I have the sony 710 and the sound comes out very good, although I do want to upgrade. beware, not too many people on here like sony receivers, but i have had very good experience with mine.
1) you will need a powered sub and a subwoofer cable. You can buy a sony sub for about $100, and its good. mine is a 200 watt amp, good bass and kick, but far from being the best out there 2a) it has "active intelligence" not "pass through" I believe that basically it looks for the best signal your tv can handle, which will be 1080i and sends that signal through 2b) you will need an male DVI to a female HDMI adapter that will let you hook up to your tv. run the hdmi from the receiver and then into the adapter, then plug the adapter into your tv. 3) the back of the panel.... if you look closely, you will notice that there is a left and a right for both the a front and b front speakers, this will let you decide if you want to send audio out as surround sound or as 2 channel, but you would want to have an extra set of front speakers. lastly, you will want to send out the pcm signal from your PS3 by setting it to PCM or linear(not sure the exact terminology since i don't own a ps3) and then on the reveicer use the AFD Auto Format Decoding and set it to linear PCM, and you will get HD audio and uncompressed audio. anyother questions, send me a message. i understand the budget issue and am not as biased as others. good luck Last edited by callas01; 07-17-2008 at 09:40 PM. |

circuit city has a sony sub for 89.99 100 watt sub, not the greatest but if you plan on upgrading sometime, and have limited means you could go this route, Element ESW12 Subwoofer at CC is about $150 and says its 250 watt... don't know much about this brand though best buy has a 12" sony 200 watt for 199. I bought the 12" sony, i am very happy with it, has good punch.
