Default News Comments

Does anyone think we need the Plus or Minus next to the comments in the news section? Lately I've been having troubles with what appear to be 2 people who are actively seeking out posts/comments I make in the news column just so they can hit minus on them. It sounds like a dumb complaint but every comment I make automatically goes down to 36% (or 38%, I can't remember which). I can't imagine I am the only one having issues with this.

I know there's some comments that people make that actually shouldn't even be tollerated (like "YAY! I AM THE FIRST ONE!!!" and crap like that) but what about the people who aren't posting offensive things such as myself? Is there anything we can change or do to stop things like this? It sounds really stupid, I know, but I also find it pathetic that 2 members would be doing this and I find it hard to believe I am the only one with this problem.

We need a Digg style comment system.

Just change your sort by to sort by date, eliminates your comments from being moved down. Maybe the suggestion should be if the admins could make the default as sorted by date rather than sort by rating?

Would that actually work? I mean, I don't care where my comments are positioned at, but these 2 people (who I am assuming are newer as I never had this problem before at all) keep hitting minus on my comments. Does the way I sort the comments actually matter?

And what's a Digg style comment system?

And thank you guys for not thinking I am some crazy nut who's making a big deal out of nothing. I just don't think there should be a way that 2 people could actively seek out someone else's comments to hit minus on and continue to get away with it anomalously.

assuming they can change the default, yes. The system was set up to move unnecessary comments down and the more relevant comments up. I very seldom comment so it doesn't bother me either way

Ahhh, so they're just abusing the system in other words. Kind of stupid, if you look in the news comments for The Visitor announcement, you'll see what I mean. I say I loved The Station Agent and that I'll be getting the movie, and my comment is at 36%. The 2 other people that say they're getting the movie are at 50%. That's a pretty good example of what's happening for every comment I make.

Honestly, I like the +/- system. There have been some... uninformed posts in other areas, and it's a good way to show outsiders coming to the site that those aren't always the thought by the majority or that they're untrue. Some examples have been about title releases or studios.

Honestly, I think you're taking it way too personally. While I have actually voted you back up when I see it, there's a few things to keep in mind:

1. They're only doing it to get a rise out of you. And, by making this post, they're succeeding.
2. What harm is it that your posts are voted lower? It would be one thing if they were completely buried like Digg but they're just a little lower.
3. It allows visitors to the site to see opinions and make their own known without being a member.

Yes, someone is abusing the system. But... I'd just either not comment, let it go, or have a couple friends vote you back up.

eah but you know that there are some that hit the minus on purpose. Sometimes they'll post on there and hit minus on all the others just to make there's look like people love it. Untill you find out how many people voted for each comment.

Then they're some that have grudges against others. Will hit the minus sign or give you 1 star on your thread.

Very true, I mean, it is silly to get upset over. I just think it's equally pathetic that the same 2 people are seeking out my comments to hit minus on them. I was more just curious if the mods were able to do anything or if there was a way to keep track of who's doing it. But I'll ignore it as it is the world's smallest issue.... Those little imaginary internet plus and minuses will not control my life!!!

http://www.digg.com

Digg's comment system is threaded- like a forum. It also has "digg" and "bury" features which are basically the same as the +/- ones here.

I think a threaded news comment system would be nice

I KNOW. Somebody here is a party pooper and I know who it is. Seems like the spot light sucks when it goes to one person. You know who I'm talking about.
