Default The "Theater Experience"

Has anyone just bought a Bluray movie, not for the movie content itself, but because the "Theater Experience" was excellent? (AQ and PQ)

For me, it was Blade Runner. I saw on the movie reviews here that it was 5 star across the board and I thought. "Just how good could a 1982 movie look and sound?" I rented it, the movie was OK, but the transfer and sound mix were astounding. I bought it the next day, based on that.

Were any movies in your collection purchased for only this reason? If so. which one?

A lot of people will say they only buy movies they like. But they think that movies are good because of all the explosions and action... So Some people have and won't admit it

There is a lot of truth to that, yes. I think Transformers is a reasonably good (popcorn) movie, and that is reason for me to buy it. It looks and sounds good, is big and brash, and quite fun.

At $20 (the most I'll generally pay) No.

If I had to state my criteria, they would be (in order);

Rewatchability,

Price,
Do I already own it?

'Greatness' (lots of GREAT movies, The Deer Hunter, The Shining, etc. I doubt I'd watch more than once every one or two years)
'Demo material' (image quality, explosions, etc.)

I did buy a lot of pathetic movies for $5 - $10 during the HDDVD firesales exclusively because of image quality, explosions, etc. (Heck, I even bought 'Poseidon' but, at $4.95, I think I was overcharged ) But, at normal prices, a movie has to actually be 'good' (or, at least, a favourite. "Final Fantasy" was widely panned, but I just love a good sci-fi. So much so that, in the absence of a good scifi, I'll even settle for "Final Fantasy" (actually, watching that again, I was surprised by how good a film it is. Not 'great' by any means, but I think it's failure at the box office was exclusive due to mainstream audiences not being ready for a 'serious' CGI movie)

Just for the mere PQ and AQ? NO.
I mean they could release "Battlefield Earth" with the best PQ and AQ ever, yet I wouldn't waste 1 buck for a new copy of that woeful movie.

I have to like the movie in order to buy it.

PQ and AQ have led me towards purchasing a Blu-Ray, but are never the sole factors. I didn't buy Cloverfield, I Am Legend and I, Robot, despite having among the best PQ/AQ.

I think I've bought more good movies despite questionable PQ/AQ, such as TWBB and Juno.

Not JUST for PQ/AQ

I've bought alot of excellent films PARTLY for the PQ/AQ (Planet Earth, Mutiny on the Bounty, Black Hawk Down, etc.) but I wouldn't buy a film I don't enjoy, just because of how it looks. There's plenty of GOOD movies out there with good PQ, why bother with trash like Die Hard 4 or I Am Legend?

(Of course, 'good' is a subjective term. I've bought films like M:I III and Troy which may not be classics, but are movies that I genuinely enjoyed (conversely, I'd lump the usually well-regarded T2 in with the "movies I only bought because they were on firesale and had great image quality" which I talked about earlier)

Yeah I agree with a lot of what you have posted here. There are a lot of movies that I love that don't get much rotation from me (Deer Hunter also, Jacob's Ladder, Munich, Angel Heart) - often as I find the movies take a bit of a toll on me watching them. Whereas other "lesser regarded titles" would get more replays. Like say Bad Boys II and War of the Worlds.

I liked Final Fantasy too. Saw it at the movies, several times on DVD, and now on Blu.

I never go to the theatre JUST for PQ and AQ, but yes I do like to replicate the "Theater Experience" in my Blu purchases, be they highly visual action or thoughtful drama. Sometimes dumb fun, sometimes powerful story etc etc it's all a part of the moovies

I'd rather buy a movie with subpar everything except story. Rather than buy a movie I don't like with exceptional everything but story.

30 Days of night was a blind buy, watched once and would now trade it in at the earliest moment.

Predator, great movie, crap everything else. Would never depart with unless movie was re-released.
