Default Xbox 360 prototype worker switches to Sony PS3

Xbox 360 prototype worker switches to Sony PS3

We all know that the Xbox 360 hardware has had more problems than the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3 combined, RROD has become a joke and also public debate of why it happened.

The Xbox 360 does a lot right on the software front, but many news sites have long guessed that Microsoft rushed the 360 to beat the Sony PS3 to the market.

Today we have had some information sent in from someone who goes by the name of “Chris” and claims to of worked on the original Xbox 360 prototypes back in 2004.

They say that Microsoft’s biggest mistake was launching the 360 a year earlier than the PS3 and it’s this reason why there have been so many hardware issues.

Quote:
The thing that jumps out at me, as I’ve noticed since launch, is that the PS3 costs much more than $400, $500, even $600 to produce, yet Sony still sells the console for less, and it’s all for the consumer.

I actually worked with Microsoft on the original Xbox 360 prototypes back in 2004, and, despite the accumulated cost of the hardware, Microsoft increased the price of retail sale above the production cost.

By the 360’s launch, I was a bit ashamed to see that the Xbox 360 was so expensive even though it was cheap to produce, and that’s when several other Microsoft devs in my group and I were surprised to see that the PS3 launched at only $600.

As a developer, I was really curious about each console’s hardware, and if we had put the Playstation 3’s hardware in our original Xbox 360 prototype, it would have cost well over $700.

The Playstation 3 consists of well over $750, but I’m amazed that Sony can sell the console for $400. In my opinion, that was a very smart move on Sony’s behalf.

Due to work terms, I’ve been prohibited from saying this until early 2008, but Microsoft severely rushed development of the 360, and we had a very short time window to work with in order to launch the 360 a year earlier. That was our, and Microsoft’s, biggest mistake.

As a result, the Xbox 360 has major hardware issues. I switched over to the PS3 when my Xbox 360, the console that I helped develop, RROD’d for the 4th time.

I figured this was common knowledge by now, but good to hear it from the horses' mouth. There will be a few who criticize, but I knew about this along time ago. Crappy business practices and the $6 billion lost (heard from this forum) lends credence to the rumors of M$ considering doing away with it's gaming division. Which, despite some some others who think otherwise due to short-term thinking, would be a great thing for games.

wouldnt you too if it means you have the whole audience at the "next generation" level to try to get them to jump at your system before everybody else or would you wanna wait around and share the audience and hope they just buy your system? All about money and greed. Usually the first system that hits the "next generation" is the one to have the most problems. Example PS2. Now Xbox 360

I won't say i'm surprised as that would be a lie. My 360 has RROD'd on me twice.

And when it comes to the software comment, a lot of what I buy I will purchase for the PS3, and this year at least the exclusives on PS3 interest me more than 360's list of exclusives... Maybe Gears of War 2 but that would be it.

Sony may still be playing catch up... but looking at the worldwide sales figures they're catching up at an unbelievable rate.

good post.

as far as my gaming goes,i joined the the 3 red lights club too and had to wait an entire month for the 360 to make its return back...

thanks to sonys rock soild product i was playing Call of duty 4 online!..

Btw,i HAD to buy an intercooler for the 360 just so it wont break down,,,but the el cheapo Nyko intercooler ex is almost gone already and when the system starts up cold, the fans struggle to get the air out and sounds like a Fighter plane for awhile till it warms ups...

..I FEEL air come in harder in the window compared to the crapy stock cooling of the 360...just a broken product if you ask me waiting for it to happen.

I think this person claiming to have worked on the Xbox 360 is BS. There are facts in his story that are inaccurate...

Stating that the console was priced above production cost? There have been many reports including one's to shareholders that stated otherwise. Also stating he wasn't able to talk about it until 2008? Hmmm, Microsoft's NDA's typically last longer than just 4 years.

Most everything else he stated is common knowledge...

BTW I worked on the PS2 and helped design the Emotion Engine for it.

I agree. Definitely fishy. It vaguely says was a "developer" who "worked on" the console. What does that mean, hardware engineer presumably?
If so, would he even know about the cost of all the components at any given time?

Where exactly did you hear this load of crap?
They took a $1.1 Billion loss in Q4 2007 for extending the warranty to 3 years (RROD). And now they are reporting a profit of $426 million for this year.

I believe that is the total of combined losses from both Xbox systems. Settle down, chief.

I have a hard time believing that MS has been selling 360s at a profit since launch.

360 has a state of the art GPU (for 2005) and while the CPU is no CELL, its no slouch either.

Also came with component and composite cables, headset, wireless controller, etc.

I mean PS3 was supposedly costing Sony about $900 to produce when they launched at $600, I just can't imagine an Xbox 360 costing like 70% less to produce than a PS3 when you compare the launches.

Thats the only thing i question in this article, which makes me think the guy isn't legit.

It's not a load of crap, but I believe the 6 billion loss is since the launch of the original xbox(it may be more now). It may take me a while, but i'll dig through the yearly reports and see if I can give you some numbers. Also finding the actual numbers for the xbox is hard. The numbers are all bunched together in the Entertainment division. That has zune, xbox hardware/software, microsoft enabled cell phones/pdas, ect. Also if you would have read the link you posted closely you can see the division is a failure.
