Default onkyo TX-SR 606

I just bougth an Onkyo 606 and my Sony Bdp 300 doesn't decode DTS HD or DOLBY TRUE HD, is there a way in wich my receiver be able to decode these formats , even tough my blu-ray doesn't do it?

I will be grateful if i can get any help with it.

i dont see bitstreaming capabilities for the 300. so i would say no, only pcm audio from blu rays. someone correct me if im wrong

edit: or did i hear about a insider saying it was able to decode true hd?

edit edit: i did a search and did find an insider saying there was decoding of true hd. i dont have your player so im unsure on how to enable it. but i think you need the latest firmware update. and you would have to use the analog out on the player.

Decoding THD is an undocumented feature -- and only passes it over hdmi (decoded as pcm):

The Sony 300 can't output the HD Soundformats. The only one it can decode is Dolby Digital Plus. A format that's rarely used anymore.

If I were you I would return the Sony Player and get one of the following:

Panasonic DMP-30
Samsung BD-P 1400
Samsung BD-P 1500

They all can output the HD Soundformats in Bitstream

The Panasonic and the 1400 can also decode them all internally.
The 1500 is not currently able to decode DTS HD Master.
(It will be after the next Firmware update though)

Sadly no Sony Player can output the HD Soundformats
Except for the Sony 500 which can output TrueHD. Not DTS HD though.

It's a shame that the company that basically invented Blu Ray can't build decent Players.

Since you have the 606 you should really get one of the 3 mentioned above because if you bitstream them the quality is noticeably better.

At least you have a great receiver

i believe the S300 can decode Dolby TrueHD as well.

Regardless, it's a horrible player. It's $400 price tag is an insult when you consider the excellent PS3 is also $400 and regardless whether or not you use its features, can do so much more for the same price.

Sure, it decodes internally and outputs LPCM over HDMI, but it decodes ALL of them. It also handles BD-J titles better than ANY blu-ray player out there and is of course profile 2.0 compatible.

The panny DMP BD 30 cant decode the HD audio internally. It can only bitstream it to the receiver

I have the predecessor to the 606 - the 605. It is a tremendous unit - runs a little hot but otherwise perfect with my PS3. Although it does decode all the latest codecs, the PS3 does the decoding and sends PCM to the 605. I can't see upgrading anytime soon. Buy it.
