Default HOME - Region Locked?!

Didn't see this posted anywhere (did a search for "HOME" and the first thread was Warhawk! )

Anyway, this was reported over at PS3fanboy.com.

I just read it and was surprised to learn that HOME will be region locked.

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/07/16/...region-locked/

Quote:
We were given a pretty in-depth walkthrough of the current state of Home, including a couple of game spaces (images of those later), during which we asked the bloke as many questions as we could think of. Top of our list? Making sure that we would be able to meet up with our friends all across the planet in the various public spaces. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Home's public spaces are going to be region-specific.

If you want to meet up with your pals from abroad, then you'll be able to invite them into your apartment, but warping into the game space to bowl or play chess is not possible. This is allegedly to make sure that each region receives an "experience most suited to their tastes" as well as, no doubt, to keep advertisers happy. The last thing they want is Europeans seeing an advert directed at Americans.
Bummer - guess I'll have to launch into a game the old fashion ways if I'm playing with my buddies from overseas.

You can still goto their HomeSpaces and vice verse. What they're refering to are stuff like the common lobby areas, like the Home Square shown at E3.

So, if me and a bunch of buddies all show up in the Warhawk room (assuming anyone is still playing Warhawk by the time this comes out ) - is everyone going to be able to launch into a game together if they're from different countries?

Separating anything in HOME is a bad idea. You wouldn't region lock the Friend's list, or Online games, ect.

However, I guess this isn't exactly against Sony's current structure of separating things like demos, games, and services (PSN store, PSP functions, ect.) - so, maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

Either way, this sounds like a potential handicap for HOME. Of course, I'll have to wait for HOME to come out to actually see if that's the case. . . .

The region locked areas are public areas. I can understand that. It would be confusing as an English speaking person to walk around and have Japanese ads up everywhere and not being able to understand anything the Japanese players are saying. However private spaces (ie. your home) will be region free so you can have whoever you want there. So you can still meet up with your friends and go off and game that way.

That has GOT to be sarcasm.

The different regions for Home (just like for PSN) has been known for ages.

lol i agree my comment was a little over the top, but i just recon they could have done alot better job with the psn than try and focus it around home! The region bit i can understand, was just abit of a kick in the "manhood"

it may seem like i have something against home which i realy don't. im just worried that it will turn out unused and wasted.

Hopefully you can all prove me wrong and rub it in my face when it's "the thing" to do on playstation.

My thoughts exactly parker. It just makes sense. Just another easy way Sony can ensure that the public areas aren't too congested.

I do imagine they'll eventually come up with ways to play some of the games like pool or bowling or whatever with people in other regions - at least if they are on your friends list.

It's called renovating your Summerhome or buying another luxury virtual home you can customize till your hearts content. Problem solved.
