180hz now!!??

Ok this is ridiculous! I thought 120hz was fast enough. What benefit would 180hz provide over 120hz. I mean i love 120hz and all, but some 120hz video looks artificial. so i can only imagine how 180hz would look. I wonder if you would even be able to tell a difference? Well i guess one good thing is that it will cause 120hz displays price to drop.

The Victor Company (JVC) revealed a demonstration model of an HDTV with a 180Hz refresh rate, at CEATEC, the consumer electronics and IT trade show in Japan.

According to JVC, the 32-inch panel is the first LCD panel to feature this refresh rate.

The company achieved the improved rate via custom algorithms which interpolate a typical HDTV feed of 60Hz and then insert two frames of its own.

The higher refresh rate is designed to significantly reduce the blur in fast movement, and is an improvement the current premium 120Hz refresh rate.

The set has a 1024×768 pixel count, compared with the more usual 720p 1280×720 pixel count for 32in displays.

JVC’s 180Hz set is still at the prototype stage, but the company expects it to eventually go into production.

LAS VEGAS: LG Electronics has also joined the thin panel scrum with two new thin screen flat panel TVs — a 120Hz LCD TV and a 180 HZ bezel-less plasma screen.

The two new TVs were introduced during a CES media briefing. The LG60 LCD TV will come with a 120 Hz 1080p panel, and continues the current consumer electronic product focus on design, with subtle red light emitting from the sides and LEDs that show the TV’s status.

The PG60 1080p plasma has a bezel-less design that removes the usual gap between the screen and the housing. It also has a 30,000:1 contrast ratio, which LG claims is the industry’s highest, and a Dual XD Engine processor. It also almost doubles the current fastest refresh rate, with 180 Hz.

The company also debuted the LG70 and PG70 wireless HD signal compatible televisions.

The releases came as Simon Kang, LG Digital Display Company chief executive, said LG plans to become one of the top three global TV makers in 2008. This success, he said, will be based on new LCD and plasma TVs with innovative designs and upgraded features as well as more aggressive marketing.

Of these 17 million TVs, 14 million will be LCD models and three million will be plasma models. To achieve its ambitious sales goal in 2008, he said LG would concentrate on product leadership, profitability and stronger marketing.

Great - 10:10 pulldown.
I wonder if it will botch it up and do 3:2 pulldown then 4:4 pulldown thus exacerbating the judder?

Samsung is barking up the wrong tree. See what happens when buzzwords get out of control? Is Samsung about to buy a major motion picture house and start filming all with Red in 1080p120?

+1. 240hz is just insane. im quite happy with 120hz. the 180hz just triples 60hz which makes no sense to me. well in any case, cheaper 120hz for everyone!

Oh my god! Whats the point? I think 60hz is good enough for me and 120hz is good enough for those that like it but 180hz? I just hope this dont bite Samsung in the butt like their recent Blu Ray player has.

Believe it or not a freind of mine called Sony and asked them if they were gonna do that very thing. The customers Service Reps response? "Highly unlikely". But one never knows.

600hz is about the only one worth pursuing after 120hz and most 120hz sets right now dont even do 5:5 pulldown.

and they are also talking about having tvs with a 1440p resolution... technology will always get better. I guess its just our job to pick out the gimmicks
