WildTangent boss Alex St. John claims that the 7th generation of videogames will be the last. He even claims that he is right. Wow. And I thought it was PC gaming that was dying. |

what a crock, the 7th gen. console market is going to be bigger than the 6th gen most likely and PC gaming is on the decline.
Explain how consoles are going out. Now if you are talking about consoles transforming into multimedia computers then i might agree that the console will die, but gaming will certianly be a focus in a MM hub. |

I know one person who plays PC games and all he plays is counterstrike. Everyone else I know uses consoles. Heck, even my counterstrike friend has PS2. Consoles aren't going anywhere...

Gaming now makes more money than music and movies per year. Until it goes from being a 50+ billion dollar industry to losing money consoles will die. But the trend of gaming is getting more and more popular so it doesnt look like that will happen anytime soon. Whoever said consoles will die is a moron.

What a turdnugget. So his guess is PC games will absorb consoles? How bout consoles absorbing the PC gaming market?? The PS3 is basically a personal computer right now... I can see the PS4 having all or more capabilities than its PC rivals when it is released.
And people like to game on their massive TVs. Not a small monitor or laptop screen. The only thing I've heard is around 2020-2025 is video game consoles will use nanotechnology and the chips will be stored on contact lenses and your viewing screen is everything you see. |

i think if anything consoles are getting bigger and not physically. i mean they are getting more popular. think about the ps2/gamecube/xbox. looking back, they were just machines kids used to play games on. now they're serious pieces of hardware that can do everything.
i don't think that consoles will cease to exist. it's just that they are becoming more similar to computers. |

Although i would say the gaming industry is doing well atm!
Especially with the release of the Ati 4800 series, very high performance gaming has become cheap! ![]() |

Some people are haters. Some people just make bold proclamations to get attention or claim to be the first guy who said if they ever happen to get one right. This knob might fall in one of those camps.
Other folks like to chirp about convergence, which is largely accurate in the 90's, "Hey now, why isn't this lame, clunky PDA also a cell phone... and why is my big, ugly cell phone also a PDA?" Duh. However consoles and PCs / laptops will coexist for a long, long time for a number of reasons: 1 - PC gaming is only for the hardcore these days because for most folks, the experience just sucks. Yeah the controls are "great" for FPS and certain RPGs... ok, but the screen is ****ing small not matter how you cut it, and playing hunched over at some desk is re-stinkin-tarded. People want to play while lounging on their couch or bed watching a giant freaking screen. 2 - laptop gaming is portable, and therefore perhaps more cozy than PC gaming, but otherwise inferior in all ways. In sum, all of the downside of #1 and then some... but portable. 3 - Consoles, though gaining in computing power, are going to lag behind PCs and laptops for a long time when it comes to true usability. Maybe they'll become very good web browsers, but laptops are just great that. Maybe you'll be able to do spreadsheets and presentations and such, but I really doubt it will work as well or as easily. Maybe big-brick PCs specifically will die out, but laptops and all-in-one units are already pushing that trend independent of consoles. |

![]() ![]() The main drawback of PC gaming is the enormous expense. But for those who can afford it it's great. But still I don't think consoles are going anywhere fast. He's just trying to grab attention Last edited by Seeking_Alpha; 07-24-2008 at 09:35 PM. |

I worked with St. John a bit a couple of jobs ago in the late '90s, and this is par for the course. He is an extremely sharp guy (he developed the DirectX API for Microsoft) so the hero worship he'd get at GDC or E3 back then was deserved, but he seemed to love the spotlight just as much as development. Eventually things soured at MS and he was out -- he even had to be escorted from the building we heard. Dramatic till the end.
I think he's just whipping up some publicity here. I doubt even he believes it. |

PC Gaming isn't going anywhere. All the old games get emulated on the PC so the PC is eternal. How many people have working original NES consoles? (I do) How many people use their PC to play old NES classics? (I do again) As PCs get faster they also become able to emulate the newer games. Then there are games like Oblivion that are SO much easier to play on the PC not to mention if you've got the right setup then games even look better on the PC as you can control the display settings and resolutions.
As for consoles ending at 7th generation? I doubt it. Besides, isn't Sony wanting to make the PS3 last 10 years? I wonder how that plays into this. There is a limit to how "Good" you can make graphics but maybe by 2020 or whatever they will make a "real" virtual reality like the Holo-deck on Star Trek. |

Consoles went extinct in the '80s. Hell Video games went extinct in the 1980s. This guys crazy is about 4 decades late. At least in the '80s they had some basis to make the claim. Now he is late to the party and all thats left is the clean up crew. Maybe there is some left over cake for him. |
