Default What happened?!?! Fox/MGM titles pulled

So I had a bunch of Pre-Orders at DVDEmpire.com and they send me a bunch of messages today telling me that a bunch of movies aren't going to be available now. Which include:

Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal
Dances With Wolves
Dodgeball
Ice Age

Anyone know what happened to these?!

Fox pulled them for an unknown reason. News of it started to make the rounds late last week. My guess is that since they were all mpeg2 discs and the recent round of releases hasn't garnered solid reviews in the PQ department that they're reworking them.

Dances With Wolves was gonna be a BD-50. Maybe it'll be both cuts/ branching when it gets out?

Well better to wait and get it right than to release some crap just to get it out on the market. And that would explain why Mr. and Mrs. Smith is still being released (AVC on a BD-50)

Probably quality control. Get 'em done right the first time.

Disappointing now? Yes.

In the end:
It'll be worth it.

Well dances with wolves was supposed to be AVC on BD-50 as well, and that got pulled...

Back on topic, I can definately wait and let my wallet take a break. There will still be a plethora of titles to fulfill my urges.

Amen to that. These titles need to be sweet PQ - make everyone jealous who's not in the right camp.

Well, that sucks. I have already sold my DVDs of these movies, and now I have to wait even longer.

Rumor Killed:

Quote:
First up this afternoon, a Blu-ray Disc update. There have been a few reports today that Fox and MGM have cancelled a bunch of their upcoming Blu-ray Disc titles. I spoke with a senior Fox rep a short time ago, and this is completely untrue. What's happening is that they're moving some dates around. Nothing is being cancelled per se. Some titles are moving up, some are being pushed back. There's just a bit of fluidity to the schedule due to authoring and replication issues, and it should all settle down again soon. I'm sure there are those hyping this as "the end of Blu-ray" online, but the reality is far from it. We'll post more details on the revised street dates when they're available.

Okay, this is my take at interpreting things. I believe this is also part of the PS3 effect.

These titles have been delayed. Eragon and Night At The Museum have been announced.

Apart from QC, authoring and replication issues, I believe Fox is dishing out new releases to entice PS3 people to get BDs instead of DVDs. Fox has been good with catalog releases, pumping them up with lots of extras on DVDs. On BDs, there's yet a BD that's fully loaded. Priming up new releases is rational: BD owners will not have owned it previously; and later on, Fox may/may not release another version with lots more extras.

For a short/long term gain, both consumer and studio benefits, I think.

Very likely they are adding BD+ to the discs as well.

Maybe they will produce the extended version of Dances with Wolves for blu-ray, and improve the content of the others in significant ways, too.

Yes WriteSimply is bang on. This is a very good thing. We will buy both of these more recent theatrical releases. Kids loved the Eragon books and A Night at the Museum is supposed to be very good - we haven't seen it yet. Many of the delayed items I already have on DVD and wouldn't be buying them for quite some time...at least until the price drops.

Would you have rather have the new Casino Royale first or Dr .No? See what he means. This is great news.
