Default My Top 10 Albums of 2016

1. Sioux Falls - Rot Forever: This list should honestly be titled “Best Album of 2016, and some other good ones”, because this album is above and beyond anything else from this year. It’s been about the only thing I’ve listened to for the past 2 months straight. It has everything for me. A bit of nostalgia, familiarity, remnants of high school, feelings of friendship. The music reminds at times of a more simplistic Castevet/CSTVT, with a dash of older Modest Mouse, with a slight sound of the 90’s, mixed with some good old fashioned emo. It’s almost like this album was created specifically for me. It’s their first release, and a double album at that. And you know what, even clocking in at 72 minutes...I’m still left wanting more.

2. You Blew It! - Abendrot: It’s You Blew It!, what else do I need to say? This band has steady been one of my favorites ever since discovering them while working at Hot Topic. Yes. Hot Topic. No idea why their song was playing in our store, but it was, and I instantly loved it. That was off their debut full length, and here we are at their 3rd. This band keeps pumping out amazing music, while never recording the same thing twice. The amount of growth and maturity this band has gone through over the years is beyond impressive.

3. Whitney - Light Upon the Lake: Another debut full length on my list. I recently found out about them, and was hooked. This is just so good. Simple, fun, brilliant writing. It reminds me of The Bee Gees...if the Bee Gees played rock in the 70’s and didn’t go down the bullshit disco road. It just puts me in a very good mood listening to it. Smile during every song.

4. Frankie Cosmos - Next Thing: 2016 was a year in which I really got into female fronted bands, of all genres. Frankie Cosmos is simple, quirky, fun, indie-twee-pop-whatever. Like the Whitney album, I just have a smile on my face while listening to this album.

5. Knola - To the Rhythm: Jack Senff. Is there anything this kid can’t do? Merchant Ships, William Bonney, Midwest Pen Pals, and now this? Come on dude. Marry me already. Knola’s debut EP was absolutely perfect. So when this full length was announced, I pre-ordered every color/variant available. It definitely didn’t disappoint. The only thing I wish, is that there was more of it.

6. Weekend Nachos - Apology: Weekend Nachos. What can I say about them? I was at one of their first shows ever. I was young. I hadn’t really found my musical taste. I just took everything in. So I got their demo cassette, and couldn’t stop playing it. Their Torture EP is one of my favorite 7”s of all time. But to be honest, I didn’t listen to much after that. I kinda fell off and listened to their early shit on repeat. But when Apology came out, I had to give it a listen. And after going back and listening to their entire catalogue, I have to say, I think this is their best full length. Not a bad song on it.

7. Told Slant - Going By: Recently introduced to this band via a friend. Initial thoughts were “okay, this could be cool,” but I was a little thrown off by the vocals. But after a bunch of listens, I quickly grew to enjoy it. Definitely reminds me of early Modest Mouse, with a little bit of Xiu Xiu thrown in. An odd combination, but the simplicity and catchy-ness of these songs make it very enjoyable.

8. Kowabunga! Kid - Wasting My Time: I have a lot of friends in bands, but I’ve never enjoyed any album like this one. This blew me away. Just really fast, short, catchy punk/pop music. Fun is the only word I can use to describe it. Not enough people are listening to this.

9. Pity Sex - Hot White Moon: The final album from this band, and unfortunately, I think it’s their weakest. I love a lot of their music, and I love a few songs on this album...but it’s not perfect. There are a few duds on here, and as a whole, each song kinda songs like one another. It’s hard to differentiate what’s on this album. But that’s not too bad of a thing, as I do like the music.

10. Gouge Away - ,Dies: One of the most underrated bands in hardcore right now. As you can see from my list, hardcore really isn’t a genre I listen to new music from. I’m VERY picky with it, and usually listen to a lot of stuff from the early-mid 2000’s. Female fronted, and socially aware/conscious, this band is aggressive, fast, and riff-tastic.
